10. 500 Days of Summer

500 Days of Summer is the perfect unconventional love story featuring the oddly lovable Zooey Deschanel and Joseph Gorden-Levitt. This film tells the tragic tale of unrequited love when a guy gets unexpectedly dumped by his girlfriend. The story is told through a series of flashes back on their 500 days together in order to find out where the relationship went wrong. It calls into question whether true love actually exists and reminds us that sometimes we fall in love with people who don’t feel the same way. The movie isn’t all doom and gloom though. Tom is able to reevaluate his passions in life. It ends on a happy note when he runs into his ex and she has told him that she found her true love. He is able to wish her happiness and goes to a job interview where he meets a beautiful woman there who shares the same passions as him.

8. When Harry Met Sally

Most of us have encountered this question at some point in our lives or adolescence: can men and women truly be friends? Meg Ryan and Billy Crystal star in this romantic comedy as Harry and Sally which puts this question to the test. This movie is a classic. It’s even quoted in an episode of Sex and the City — that’s proof enough that it’s a must-see love story! The story follows these friends through 12 years of meetings and close romantic encounters, but the two never act on their desires for fear of ruining their endearing friendship.

7. Hitch

This movie is the perfect dosage of comedy and romanticism. Will Smith and James Lassiter make this romantic comedy a hilarious success — the two work so well together. Smith, who typically goes for the sci-fi dramas or action films, does quite well in this genre and gives us a bit of a grown-up take on his Fresh Prince days! The film tells the story of a womanizer who uses his skills with a woman to help other men who lack the same charisma with women. He mentors clients to give them a fighting chance at dating the woman of their dreams. Hitch, who typically never has a problem getting a woman to like him, suffers a series of a setback while trying to woo Sara Melas, who is played by Eva Mendes. This flick is just a feel-good movie that instills our forever infatuation with Will Smith.

6. Forgetting Sarah Marshall

Forgetting Sarah Marshall is the most fun film to watch on Valentine’s Day because it’s guaranteed to give a lot of laughs and tells a happy story of finding new love after a breakup. There’s a lot of big stars in this one who make the film worth watching: Jason Segal, Kristen Bell, Russell Brand and Mila Kunis. The film is about a guy who gets unceremoniously dumped after being with his girlfriend for 5 years but has a chance at getting the best kind of revenge against an ex when she comes crawling back after breaking his heart only to be turned down by him for someone else. This movie is more comical than romantic, but that’s what makes it so great!

5. How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days

Kate Hudson is the queen of romantic comedies. This blonde bombshell was at one point the center of each and every successful romantic-comedy, and her film How To Lose A Guy In 10 Days is one of the best! She stars alongside Matthew McConaughey; both are writers for big-name magazines while living in New York City. These two are both unknowingly using the other for a bet and the other for research on a story, but end up falling in love at the same time. When each one finds out about the motives behind their relationship it all comes crashing down.

4. The Break-Up

This film is probably the most empowering film for single people everywhere. Just when we thought that all romantic comedies end with the storyline of two people falling in love and living happily ever after, The Break Up shatters that stereotype. Jennifer Aniston and Vince Vaughn go through a nasty break up in this film and bid to keep the other out of their shared living space. This movie shows how awkward it can truly get when a couple breaks up while living together. In the end, the two finally cross paths in their apartment and have a conversation, but it doesn’t end with the typical grand gesture and a kiss and makeup. The two part ways, but still depicts a feel-good ending when the two meet again months later and are both doing incredibly well on their own separate paths.

3. Crazy, Stupid, Love

If not for the lovey-dovey aspects of this movie, watch it simply to see Ryan Gosling without a shirt. Trust us, it’s worth it! Crazy, Stupid, Love is a film packed with big names like Steve Carell, Ryan Gosling, Emma Stone and Julianne Moore — need I say more? The movie tells the story of a middle-aged man whose life is turned upside down when his wife unexpectedly asks him for a divorce. He’s forced to re-evaluate his life and seek his new manhood with the help of a much younger new friend, Jacob, who helps him in his hilarious attempts to pick up women at the bar.

2. He’s Just Not That Into You

Looking for a tough taste of realism on Valentine’s Day? Feeling a bit like a pessimist instead of an optimist? This film shows a series of stories involving women in their 20s and 30s and the struggles of modern-day relationships. Technology has made meeting people much easier, but it’s also complicated things a lot. Things like social media, instant messaging and texting — chivalry is hard to find in the modern world of dating, and relationships are hard to define. This film is a hilarious take on all of these issues with a star-packed cast like Ginnifer Goodwin, Ben Affleck, Jennifer Aniston, Drew Barrymore, Scarlet Johansson and Bradley Cooper. It’s a more realistic take on love as it serves up stories of heartbreak and the lovesick happy endings.

1. The Notebook

This list would not be complete without one of the biggest romantic movies of all time, The Notebook. Love it or hate it, this film was incredibly successful. It’s an adaptation on a Nicholas Sparks novel with the old aged tale of two teenagers who fall in love, the working class boy and a girl from a wealthy family, who are torn apart only to find their way back to one another as adults. The chemistry between Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams was so real the two even ended up dating one another after filming and became one of Hollywood’s most loved couples.
