Things You Might Not Know About Kristen Bell And Dax Shepard’s Relationship

Published on September 26, 2016. Updated October 13, 2020

Kristen Bell and Dax Shepard are one of Hollywood’s most lovable couples, and the most intriguing. Individually, they are two of the industry’s nicest and down-to-earth people, and together they make a fantastic couple who make fans think they are the type of celebrities it would be easy to be friends with. The amazing couple are also intriguing because, despite starring in movies and commercials together, and talking openly about their life, they are still impressively private. Get to know the pair even better with these things you didn’t know about Kristen Bell and Dax Shepard and their relationship:

10. Clashing Pasts

They say opposites attract and, while that may be cliche, it certainly seems to be the truth when it comes to Kristen Bell and Dax Shepard. In an interview with Flare magazine, Bell admitted that on paper the two seemed completely wrong for each other. “He was a drug addict and he was wild, and I was very much a good girl who went to Catholic school.” Shepard also opened up about how different he is from his wife. “Kristen’s a good girl. She grew up very Christian, went straight to college, did great in school and started work immediately. She’s charitable and philanthropic and rescues dogs. So when we met, our backgrounds were opposites. All the things I’d done were terrifying to her, and she had a hard time believing I would ever be able to stay married and monogamous and a father and all those things. For the first year and a half we were together, that was what we battled over almost weekly.”

9. Meeting

So how do two completely opposite people begin dating? Well, the actor and actress first met in 2007 sometime after Bell ended a five year relationship with her former fiance Kevin Mann. Bell and Shepard initially met at a birthday party for a mutual friend, but sparks did not fly right away. According to Shepard he was wary of Bell. “When I met her and her friends, I was suspicious of their unbridled happiness. I thought, ‘Something stinks here; they’re in a cult.'” Despite a rough beginning, the two ran into each other again two weeks later and Bell has said “it was on” from that point forward and the two began dating soon after in late 2007.

8. Strange Proposal

Over the Christmas and New Years holidays in December of 2009, the adorable fair became engaged with Bell’s rep confirming, “Yes, they are engaged. Over the holidays.” While that proposal went off without a hitch, the pair announced that they would not get married until marriage was equal for everyone. So, in June of 2013 when the Defense of Marriage Act fell, it was Bell who took to her Twitter to propose to Shepard. “Will you marry me? Xo #marriageequality #loveislove,” she tweeted at him. He replied, “DOMA is dead. Prop 8 is dead. Now let’s bring my big, g-y marriag to @IMKristenBell to Life!!!!!”

7. Wedding

Some people and a lot of celebrities definitely go all out when it comes to their wedding day, but not Kristen Bell and Dax Shepard. The famous duo decided to tie the knot at the local courthouse in a wedding that cost them a grand total of $142 on October 17, 2013. “It was just Kristen and I at this lonely courthouse so they brought us this cake afterwards,” Shepard revealed. According to Bell, the two didn’t even know what went into getting married at the courthouse so they filed the paperwork online and went to the courthouse, but forgot they needed an officiant to make it legal. “Finally, someone piped up, who was actually in the courthouse, and said, ‘I can marry you, if you want, right now.’ And we said, ‘Boom, let’s do it.’ And we got it over with.”

6. Fighting

Just like any couple, Kristen Bell and Dax Shepard fight quite often, and are open about it because they have learnt how to argue in a “healthy” way.” Bell has admitted, “I used to have a temper. I loved slamming doors — I wanted a dramatic exit! But he, having worked through a variety of emotional issues to get sober, said, ‘This isn’t going to work. This isn’t how I’m going to communicate for the rest of my life.’ When someone doesn’t fight back and goes, ‘I don’t want to do this,’ that threat is real. It makes you reevaluate your behavior. The way Dax and I argue now — and we argue a lot; we disagree on almost everything! — is so healthy.”

5. Family Time

The same year that they were married, they also started their family. They welcomed their first daughter Lincoln Bell Shepard on March 28, 2013 and the next year welcomed their second daughter Delta Bell Shepard on December 19, 2014. Of naming their second daughter, Shepard explained, “It was a joke because our first daughter’s name is Lincoln, which is very masculine. So, a friend of mine teasingly texted me: ‘Oh great! What’s this one gonna be? Navy Seal? Delta Force? Green Beret?’ I was reading the text out loud to Kristen. And I said, ‘Oh Louis Steve said what if we named her Delta?’ Delta! Delta Bell Shepard! That’s it!'”

4. The Tattoo

Since the famous couple didn’t get engaged or married in the most traditional ways, fans shouldn’t assume that they carried through with the tradition of a wedding ring. Instead of getting a ring, Shepard decided to get a tattoo instead! In an appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, he explained that he never really liked wearing jewelry, and figured that a “Bell” is a very easy thing to tattoo in honor of his wife’s last name so he got a bell tattoo on his ring finger. “I felt obliged to warn all the men that I’m taken. I thought a tattoo would be fitting,” he joked.

3. Therapy

Unlike a lot of other couples, Dax Shepard and Kristen Bell are not afraid to open up about their differences as a couple and are very open about attending therapy. “I thought I had this life thing down pat when I met Dax. I didn’t realize that I needed a much bigger toolbox to have confrontations and disagreements with people,” Bell has said.  Meanwhile, Shepard has said, “In my previous relationship, we went to couples’ therapy at the end, and that’s often too late. You can’t go after nine years and start figuring out what patterns you’re in.”

2. Sexiest Vegetarians?

When she was only 11 years old, Kristen Bell became a vegetarian and then in 2012 she made the transition to vegan with her husband after they watched the documentary Forks Over Knives. As a result, in June 2013 they were named the Sexiest Vegetarian Celebrities by PETA, but in an embarrassing moment, Shepard had to tweet out that he couldn’t accept the award because he had begun eating meat again six months prior.

1. Supporting Each Other

Out of a ton of celebrity couples, these two always seem happy and welcoming and loving of each other and their fans, and that is why it is shocking to learn of the personal battles that they are going through together. For years, Dax Shepard battled an addiction to alcohol and drugs and now he often states that it is Kristen Bell and their family together that have kept him sober and happy. Meanwhile, Kristen Bell has opened up about her own struggles with depression and anxiety, and that Dax has been her biggest support system in her battle.
