Ever since that iconic performance with Justin Timberlake at the 2015 CMA Awards, Chris Stapleton has been the talk of the town in country music. Even though he’s a solo act, he shares his success and the stage with his wife, fellow songwriter and musician, Morgane Stapleton. These two are already being compared to iconic music duos Johnny Cash and June Carter! Similar to many country stars, Chris and Morgane live a relatively private life out of the spotlight, but we did some digging and found 7 things you probably didn’t know about their relationship!
7. How They Met
The two musicians met back in 2003 while Chris Stapleton was working at a Nashville publishing house and Morgane was working at a neighboring publishing house. At the time they both worked as songwriters. Morgane had a crush on Chris and conveniently also had a friend who worked with him, so she’d sit in her office at Sea Gayle Music and wait for Chris to walk by. “We’d hear the jingle of his keys as he walked down the hall, and we knew he was coming to play us whatever new song he had written,” she said in an interview with the Washington Post.

6. She Used to Sing to his Songs Before They Dated
Today these two share the stage for every performance, but their history singing together goes so far back that when Morgane first started singing along with Chris — he didn’t even know! “I was singing with Chris long before he knew I was singing with him,” she said in an interview with the New York Times. She would ask his publishing representative for “volumes of his songs, CDs of everything he’d ever written up until that point, and I would take them home and study and sing along.”

5. Their First Date
Not surprisingly, their first date was at a songwriting session! Eventually he asked me to write a song with him, and that ended up being our first date. We didn’t get much writing done that night,” she said. It was 6 p.m. on a Friday night and what turned out to be a work session became a first date. Four years later they were married.

4. You Are My Sunshine
Chris and Morgane tied the knot in 2007. In an interview with Rolling Stone, Chris revealed that before they got married, he had the words, “You Are My Sunshine,” etched into his wedding ring. For the compilation album Southern Family, the musical couple recorded their own version of the song. The first time they sang the song together was 10 years ago when they bought their first house. “We had just bought our first house. We weren’t married yet,” said Chris. Morgane then chimed in, “We had put down a slate floor, and it was empty. We didn’t have furniture, but for whatever reason you had a guitar and started playing something.” That something turned out to be the iconic song “You Are My Sunshine.”

3. She Helps Pick His Songs
Stapleton’s latest album, From A Room: Vol. 1, was thanks to Morgane keeping track of all his songs over the past years by burning them onto CDs and cataloging them. “My wife has great taste in everything but men,” joked Chris in an interview with the Washington Post. “The vast majority of the songs on my debut album, Traveller, came from lists she made.”

2. They Support Each Other
It’s not easy for a couple to work together. Many like to keep their personal and professional lives separate. This is not the case for Chris and Morgane. They are able to not only be married and raise two kids together, but also write songs together, record and perform alongside one another. It might not be smooth all the time, but at the end of the day it’s worth it. “Oh, we drive each other crazy once in a while, but being without each other drives us even more crazy,” said Morgane. In a separate interview Chris said they’re each other’s support. “We’re married so we hold each other accountable. We can lift each other up on bad nights, kind of give each other a wink when we screw up or do something funny.”

1. Family Life
They live on a family ranch about 30 minutes from Music Row in Nashville with their two children, a boy and a girl who are 6 and 8-years-old. Since Morgane began performing with her husband more and more, especially with the release of Traveller, they tour as a family. Their children are home schooled by Chris’s mother. “When we weren’t taking the kids, I always felt like I couldn’t win. I was always in the wrong place,” said Chris.
