Julia Roberts and Danny Moder are one of Hollywood’s most private couples. They are rarely ever photographed together and they don’t really give the press many details about their life together. We’ve managed to dig up some interesting little facts about romance, so check out these 8 things you didn’t know about the couple’s relationship:
8. He Was Married When They Met
He was married when they first met on the set of The Mexican in 2001 to Vera Steimberg, a makeup artist, and she was dating actor Benjamin Bratt. Moder was the film’s B Camera First Assistant and Roberts was starring in the movie alongside Brad Pitt. His marriage was already strained when he met the actress because both he and Steimberg were on location frequently, and six months after he and Roberts met, he moved out of the home he shared with his wife. Vera Steimberg was reluctant to give Moder a divorce and, according to Roberts, she made things really difficult at times, so Julia reportedly paid her $400,000 to hurry the proceedings along.

7. Surprise Wedding
Steimberg and Moder divorced a month before he and the Oscar-winning actress tied the knot on July 4, 2002 at her ranch in Taos, New Mexico. The wedding was a surprise to guests who thought they were coming over for a late-night drink. The 20-minute ceremony was officiated by Roberts’ longtime friend and lawyer Barry Hirsch. She wore a pale pink cotton halter dress embroidered with pearls and antique beads and no shoes while Moder wore a red ruffled shirt and tan pants. The two exchanged handwritten vows.

6. Tense Relationship with His Family
Initially, his family weren’t big fans of the Pretty Woman star because they all loved Danny’s first wife. It didn’t help that when Steimberg stalled her divorce with the cameraman and Julia went out in a shirt that read, “A Low Vera.” Danny’s dad didn’t like that. The family also blamed Danny’s mother’s death on the actress, claiming that her son’s collapsing marriage was more than she could bear. It took a little while, but Julia ended up winning them over after the couple’s wedding when they invited her to their vacation home in Big Bear.

5. Tattoos with Each Other’s Initials
Three months before their wedding, the couple decided to get the other’s initials tattoo on their lower backs. She also had all three of her children’s names tattooed on her lower back. Looking back on the tattoos that she and Danny got together, she considers the decision idiotic because it was before they were even married.

4. Fertility Issues
The Mona Lisa Smile actress and her cameraman husband reportedly had to use IVF to conceive their twins, Hazel and Phinnaeus “Finn,” who were born on born November 28, 2004. The couple had been spotted at a fertility center in Manhattan and they announced the sex of their babies just nine weeks into the pregnancy. They have one more child, Henry, who was reportedly conceived naturally and was born on June 18, 2007. The couple does their best to keep their children out of the spotlight to give them as normal life as possible, so Julia makes a point of scheduling her movies around her kids and making sure that she doesn’t miss any big moments in their lives.

3. Love Letters
The Eat, Pray, Love actress has kept all of her love letters from her husband and plans to give them to her daughter, Hazel, one day. “I have a box that a friend gave me and it’s painted on the inside where it says ‘love letters to Julia from Danny’ [where] I’ve kept all the notes and letters that my husband has written to me over ten years,” she told Bild. “It’s grateful to give to my daughter when she grows up. Great way to get to know your parents, I think.”

2. Coworkers
The couple has continued to work together on set. For Roberts’ film Secret in Their Eyes, Moder was the cinematographer. She absolutely loves working with her husband. “It was amazing. It was so great. He’s my favorite person on the planet, so I love spending time with him and I love his work ethic. His point of view is really valuable to me,” she gushed to People. “It was great.” She added, “Also, when you feel like you have to do scenes where you’re sort of really exposing yourself in a way that I wouldn’t do sitting here with you guys comfortably, but if he was sitting right behind me and I felt some sense of that security, it just makes you want to do more, really.” They also worked together on the HBO movie The Normal Heart and Full Frontal.

1. Still in Love
After 15 years of marriage, these two are still in love and completely happy in their marriage. “There’s no way to describe it without sounding sappy or ridiculous because everything in my mind ends with an exclamation point,” she told InStyle. “The thing is, we have these three human beings who are just a complete reflection of the affection we have for each other.”
