9 Celebrities Who Were Dumped Via Text

Published on September 23, 2015.

We handle so much communication via text these days that relationships have gotten a little cruel and impersonal. With a casual relationship, people have resorted to “ghosting” — simply disappearing and failing to send or respond to texts. With a more serious relationship, people generally say something — but is it ever appropriate to dump someone via text? Then again, who wants to plan a phone call or an in-person meeting specifically to get dumped? The good news is, we’re not alone in our suffering: even celebrities have been dumped via text. Here are nine of them – and you might be surprised to learn who’s the dumper and who’s the dump-ee:

9. Katy Perry

Pop star Katy Perry was MARRIED to Russell Brand for 14 months, but she still got dumped in a text message! In an interview with Rolling Stone magazine, she dished, “Let’s just say I haven’t heard from him since he texted me saying he was divorcing me December 31, 2011.” Cold, Russell. Very cold. A few years later, when Katy performed at the Super Bowl halftime show, she still wasn’t over it; Russell wished her good luck on Twitter, which offended her. “She couldn’t believe he’d say that after everything he put her through,” a source told The Daily Mail. “This was the man who, quite literally, destroyed her heart. He slagged her off publicly around the world.”

8. Charlie Sheen

We’re not sure you need to feel bad, in general, for Charlie Sheen, but he did make the list. In April of 2011, his girlfriend, porn star Bree Olson, dumped the Two and a Half Men star with a text message. He admitted the embarrassing news at a Q&A when an audience member asked how his “goddesses” were doing. We can’t say we’re incredibly surprised.

7. Perrie Edwards

Perrie Edwards started dating Zayn Malik when they both appeared on The X-Factor, and they even became engaged. But when Zayn wanted to break it off, he only sent a text message. What makes it worse is that Perrie supported him even after he left One Direction and was seen holding hands with another woman. “It’s unbelievable, he’s an immature little boy with no thought for anyone else’s feelings,” a source told The Sun. “He ended their engagement with one text message and in the two weeks since there’s been complete radio silence between them.” Don’t you think a couple should talk about the breakup and get a little closure when it happens?

6. Lindsay Lohan

Remember when Lindsay Lohan dated Samantha Ronson in 2009? Apparently Samantha dumped Lindsay via text because she was such a mess. She was at the beginning of this heartless trend! But maybe we understand why Samantha was trying to avoid Lindsay, who was in and out of rehab centers at the time. In 2010, Lindsay was reportedly even banned from a popular Los Angeles club after throwing a glass at her ex. Samantha’s twin sister and mother even looked into getting a restraining order against Lindsay.

5. Kevin Federline

We’re not surprised that Britney Spears and Kevin Federline didn’t end up staying together — but we are a little shocked that Brit chose to end things with a text! According to The New York Post, in 2006, Britney texted her husband of two years, while he was taping an  interview, to say that she intended to divorce him. Kevin was completely thrown for a loop. Britney’s divorce filing cited irreconcilable differences, and their split was finalized in 2007. They share joint custody of their two sons, Jayden James and Sean.

4. Simon Cowell

You might be surprised to learn that The X Factor and American Idol judge has been dumped via text message, and not the other way around. But in 2008, Simon’ revealed that his ex-girlfriend Terri Seymour ended things with just a text. When rumors spread that he gave Terri a £5 million “parting gift,” he set the record straight in a strange joint interview on Extra, saying that it wasn’t true because Terri was the one who ended things. “Because Terri decided to dump me…You sent me a text,” he said. “This is weirdest interview I have ever done!” Simon exclaimed before Terri asked him for dating advice when it comes to other men. Simon and Terri claim to remain friends, but the whole things just sounds weird to us.

3. Jennifer Aniston

We’re so glad that Jennifer Aniston ended up with Justin Theroux and not John Mayer! But the Friends star dated the bad-boy singer-songwriter back in 2008 — until he ended things with a text. Apparently the couple had a twenty-minute argument over the phone first, so that’s slightly more respectable — but the text was the ultimate nail in the coffin. Afterward, John had nothing but nice things to say about Jen. “I feel bad because people think Heartbreak Warfare is about her,” he told Playboy magazine. “I want to go on record saying it’s not. That woman would never use heartbreak warfare. That woman was the most communicative, sweetest, kindest person.” He also told reporters that they simply had “different chemistry.”

2.  Carrie Underwood and Chace Crawford

We’re including both Carrie Underwood and Chace Crawford in this one since they claim that the breakup was mutual. Country star Carrie and Gossip Girl hunk Chace called it quits in 2008, when she was 25 and he was 22. “You date to figure out what works and what doesn’t,” Carrie said. “You’ve got to go through a lot of doesn’t before you find the one that does.” Carrie said of the split: “We broke up over text so… it’s like ‘peace out’,” adding that the parting of ways “was completely mutual.” Did she ever write a song about that? Free title: “It’s like peace out.”

1. Jessica Simpson

Before Jessica Simpson married Eric Johnson, she was hitched to 98 Degrees singer Nick Lachey. And in between those two husbands (and the now-infamous sexy time she shared with John Mayer), she briefly dated Adam Levine. According to Elle, the Maroon 5 frontman sent Jessica a text message saying that he was busy and needed space. Given that he tours and stars as a judge on The Voice, we do understand that he’s busy, but come on! We’re just glad it wasn’t a husband who sent the breakup text to Jessica!
