9 Things You Didn’t Know About Jennifer Aniston and Justin Theroux’s Relationship

Justin Theroux and Jennifer Aniston were one of the most high profile couples. But in contrast, they were also one of the most fiercely private couples. These two fell in love after working together on the set of a film and, after dating for a long time, they decided to get hitched in August 2015, but called it quits in February 2018, right after Valentine’s Day. Even though these two didn’t share too much about their relationship while they were together we’ve done some digging and have found these 9 things that most people don’t know about the former couple:

9. How They Met

Justin Theroux and Jennifer Aniston met on the set of Tropic Thunder in 2007. Theroux had co-written the film with Aniston’s friend, Ben Stiller. According to Jen, it wasn’t love at first sight because the two went their separate ways after they first met and didn’t meet again for three years. She talked to Popsugar about her first impression and admitted that, although she thought he seemed perfectly nice, he seemed a little dark. “I thought he was very sweet and he was always very nice. But I remember thinking he was very dark. At first you think he could be like a serial killer, but he is actually the nicest person in the world.” Interesting way to put it! Their paths crossed again when they co-starred in the 2010 film Wanderlust and quickly became friends off set. At the time, Theroux was still dating stylist Heidi Bivens, but that didn’t last long and, before we knew it, Jennifer and Justin went public with their relationship in May 2011. They made their first public appearance together at an after-party for the MTV Movie Awards in June.

8. The Engagement Ring

It was big news when Justin decided to pop the question to Jennifer back in August 2012 and the ring was huge! Even Aniston refers to it as ‘the rock’ in an interview with Times: “He rocked it up. It took me a while to get used to it. I’m not a diamond girl. I’m more into Indian jewelry and stuff.” The wedding band isn’t quite as flashy, but it’s just as beautiful and perfectly suited for Jennifer. It’s a simple gold band encrusted with diamonds — not too flashy or glamorous, but rather classic and elegant. Both Theroux and Jennifer had their wedding bands designed by her friend, Jennifer Meyer. “I just think it’s so beautiful. I love it because he picked it, put it into a setting and it’s simple,” she said. Justin decided to pop the question while the two were vacationing in Rome on his 41st birthday.

7. Being Married

They had been dating for many years before they finally tied the knot and Jennifer said things didn’t seem much different after the wedding, but instead they felt rather normal because they had felt married for a long time. In an interview with Entertainment Tonight, Justin said something similar. “Oh my god. It’s really nice to say ‘my wife.’ I’m not [used to saying wife]. I don’t want to get used to it for a while. It’s nice to drop the fiancee moniker. There’s just sort of an easy that comes with it that’s really nice. I can’t quite describe it. I guess it’s just one of those things that’s like you know it when you see it, or feel it when you feel it for those who are married they’d know. But it’s just something that settles and feels lovely and wonderful.” He later went on Good Morning America and sung the same praises for Jennifer by stating that being married to her was “wonderful.” “It’s fantastic. Something really does shift in a wonderful way and it sort of refocuses things and in a weird way I was sort of…it was a long time coming, but also put us in exactly sort of the right space…it’s a wonderful thing,” he said.

6. The Wedding

Despite all the poking and prodding, Justin and Jennifer took their time getting married and waited until August 2015 to finally tie the knot. Their wedding ceremony was very small and intimate and took place at their Bel Air mansion. Among the 70 friends and family in attendance, guests included celebs like Orlando Bloom, Ellen DeGeneres, Portia de Rossi, Whitney Cummings, Courteney Cox and Lisa Kudrow. In order to keep the wedding a secret and maintain their privacy, many guests were told it was going to be a celebration for Justin’s 44th birthday and security was tight! People were asked to check their phones at the door. Howard Stern joked a bit about it all. “Why can’t I have my cell phone? I don’t want to take a picture of you two! I really don’t. I want my cell phone so after I make this speech I can call my car and get the f-ck outta here!” He also revealed some details like the fact that Jimmy Kimmel officiated their wedding and Sia performed. Courteney Cox was Jennifer’s maid of honor and Scott Campbell, a tattoo artist responsible for giving Theroux many of his tattoos, was the best man. Jennifer has commented that neither her nor Justin have even seen their wedding photos and she’s happy they were able to keep things so private. She said, “We were determined to keep it just private and to ourselves. And the thing is, we haven’t even seen pictures. But, you know, it was just everything we wanted it to be, and [we are] very happy that we didn’t have to see our faces on the cover of a magazine,” she said in an interview with Yahoo Beauty.

5. Their Honeymoon

The adorable couple decided to go for a not-so traditional honeymoon by vacationing with their close friends instead of just the two of them. When they were newlyweds, Justin and Jennifer headed to the Four Seasons in Bora Bora with fellow celebs Chelsea Handler, Courteney Cox and Jason Bateman. “It was a fantastic honeymoon. We had thought about it – we could just do a normal honeymoon, or we could go with some friends, keep the party going, relax, and have fun. It was really special, it was really beautiful.” What many people don’t know is that Justin had a near death experience while on their honeymoon! He had gone scuba diving and really enjoyed it, so he decided to do it again while on their trip. He enlisted some friends to go out on a boat, but the second time around their instructor was French and he didn’t speak English very well. While they were diving 40-feet underwater, Justin realized his oxygen tank was close to running out. He tried using a bunch of signals to let their instructor know, but unfortunately he wasn’t picking up on them. “I was using every hand signal I could possibly figure out. I said, ‘Look,’ And he went, ‘Oh my God, you’re about to die.’ And the guy just reaches and grabs my respirator and, he has like an emergency respirator. Why are we doing an emergency when earth is right there [though]? I can see it, about 40 feet [away]. But I can’t just swim up to the top. So he pulls the respirator out, sticks it in my mouth, hits this clear button which sends all these bubbles out and sends water down my throat. And now I’m like coughing and hacking underwater.” He finished off the story stating that he has not been scuba diving since and we understand why!

4. Jennifer’s Pet Peeves

Jennifer was not keen on Justin’s interest in video games. In an interview with Glamour magazine, Justin divulged that Jennifer would sometimes get annoyed if Justin spent hours playing Call of Duty: Black Ops 3. “Wifey is like, ‘Where are you?’ She still doesn’t see it as a social app. Like, I am hanging out with my friends, technically, and she’s like ‘No. You are sitting there watching a TV playing a game.’ Well, it looks weird when you walk in and they’re just sitting there screaming into a headset and they’re killing each other. I’m going to war, and she’s not understanding. Then I come back from war and she’s upset.” Although the California girl and former Friends actress prefers to keep her wardrobe pretty casual, she has said that their fashion sense kind of “met a bit in the middle.” She even remembered the first time she saw him on set: “He was wearing black, black, black and I started to sweat just looking at him.”

3. Justin Makes Her Feel

It’s no secret that Justin Theroux is known as a bit of a funny guy and he doesn’t take things too seriously; he’s constantly cracking jokes which is something Jennifer admired about him. “I’m lucky because Justin is the funniest person I’ve met and we make each other laugh. Laughter is one of the great keys to staying youthful.” What initially drew her to him was the fact that she felt protected and safe. “He’s a protector, for sure. He’s just a good human being, and so funny.” She even divulged once that she believed he was sent to her from her first love, an unnamed man she fell for back in her 20s who passed away after suffering from a brain tumor. “He was my first love — five years we were together. He would have been the one. But I was 25, and I was stupid. He must have sent me Justin to make up for it all.”

2. Wardrobe Conflicts

During an interview with Entertainment Tonight, Justin dished on their biggest wardrobe conflicts. Both actors had very distinct senses of style; for Justin he’s very edgy while Jennifer is much more laid back. He said Jennifer has commented on is his amount of jackets. “[Jennifer] says, ‘You have too many jackets’ and it’s true. I have, like, a weird obsession about buying jackets and we live for the most part in Los Angeles, or I’m in Texas, so don’t really need any winter coats, but a lot of times, she’s like, ‘Do you really need this many jackets?'” On the other hand, Justin said Jennifer had fallen into the typical female trap of owning too many shoes. “Trust me, I’ve gone to the garbage can with many piles of shoes,” he joked. Despite their differences, there were some compromises along the way. Prior to marrying Jennifer, Justin said he would never consider wearing open-toed shoes. He loved his combat boots and sneakers, but he would sport a more laid back look and Jennifer would rock a leather jacket and an all black ensemble while they were together.

1. Pregnancy Rumors

Throughout her entire career, Jennifer Aniston has been forced to battle against tabloid rumors revolving around her personal life. She’s been the subject of endless headlines, especially after her very public divorce from former husband, Brad Pitt. She’s been accused of choosing her career over starting a family or being lonely, then once she got engaged to Justin, things got even worse! Jennifer is always under a microscope for either being pregnant, getting married (before they actually tied the knot) and even speculation that her relationship was on the rocks. In 2016, Jennifer was targeted while on vacation with her husband as reporters speculated that she was pregnant after walking around in a bikini with what seemed to be a bloated tummy. This seemed to be the last straw for Jennifer as her publicist vehemently denied the rumors and soon after she penned an op-ed for Huffington Post and titled it “For The Record.” She started out by writing, “Let me start by saying that addressing gossip is something I have never done. I don’t like to give energy to the business of lies, but I wanted to participate in a larger conversation that has already begun and needs to continue.” She talked mainly about body shaming, feminism and the stereotypes that women fall victim to. “We are complete with or without a mate, with or without a child. We get to decide for ourselves what is beautiful when it comes to our bodies. That decision is ours and ours alone.” Of course, Justin Theroux was one of the first people to show support for his wife and shared the link on his social media stating, “Here’s just one reason why…”
