Here Comes Honey Boo Boo’s 9 Biggest Scandals

Published on July 12, 2016. Updated April 3, 2017

Here Comes Honey Boo Boo was one of the most controversial reality TV shows in recent history. Featuring Mama June and her four children – Anna “Chickadee,” Jessica “Chubbs,” Lauryn “Pumpkin” and Alana “Honey Boo Boo” – the show was criticized for being “offensive,” “outrageous” and “exploitive,” but the reality TV family didn’t seem to mind. They soaked up every last bit of attention (and every last dollar) until the show was axed in October 2014. Here Comes Honey Boo Boo has now been cancelled for almost two years and all we’ve learned is that the scandals that were happening off-camera were bigger than anything that we saw on the show, which is why we have for you the 9 biggest scandals to rock the reality TV family:

9. Child Protective Services Investigation

Back in 2012, Honey Boo Boo’s family became the subject of a child protective services investigation when Mama June was featured on Toddlers & Tiara’s feeding Alana a Red Bull and Mountain Dew concoction called Go Go Juice. They visited the family again when a video surfaced online of the young Honey Boo Boo dancing on a bar for money. Mama June defended herself, claiming that it was a college bar and not a sleazy one and, with the help of a court appointed attorney, Mama June was able to have the case thrown out.

Child Services investigated the family once again in 2014 when it was reported that Mama June had reconciled with convicted child molester Mark McDaniel, who had been charged with molesting her daughter Anna “Chickadee” Cardwell when she was eight years old. Child Services determined that Mama June could keep Alana as long as Sugar Bear moved back in with them.

8. Fake Living Arrangements

Before Honey Boo Boo landed her own reality show, her older sister Anna “Chickadee ” was living at her grandmother’s house. It wasn’t until the family landed their reality TV show that Chickadee moved back in with her mom. A source close to family told the National Enquirer that Mama June was able to convince her daughter to come back by offering her $500 a month. “They thought that Anna’s illegitimate teenage pregnancy would make for good story lines for the show,” a source said.

7. Chickadee’s Baby Daddy Drama

Teen mom Anna found herself in the middle of some baby daddy drama back in 2012. Her ex, Caleb Clark, claimed that he was her daughter Kaitlyn’s father and was fighting to gain access to her, but was unable to because Anna refused to take a paternity test. These two have a complicated history. He had wanted to marry her, but she had told him that she had cheated on him and wasn’t sure if he was Kaitlyn’s father.

6. Mama June’s Arrest Record

Mama June has had several brushes with the law. Court records show that she served time for writing bad checks in 1998 and served time again in 2004 for stealing $3,300 from a safe in a McDonalds she was managing; however, those charges were later dismissed. In 2008, additional court reports show that she was the defendant in two child support cases around the same time.

5. Who Is Pumpkin’s Dad?

Mama June’s four kids all have different fathers, but while she knows who Anna, Jessica and Alana’s fathers are, she has no idea who Lauryn’s father is. Anna confirmed this in an interview after it was revealed that Mama June was dating convicted child molester Mark McDaniel, who had served time for molesting Anna when she was eight years old. Lauryn, aka “Pumpkin,” was led to believe that McDaniel was her dad, but he reportedly told her that he wasn’t her dad.

4. Pumpkin Nearly Goes Blind

During filming of season two of Here Comes Honey Boo Boo, Lauryn “Pumpkin” nearly went blind when Mike “Sugar Bear” Thompson reportedly tossed a set of car keys at her and hit her directly in the eye. She was rushed to the hospital where she was kept overnight for a serious scratch on her eye and had to wear an eye patch for weeks.

3. Mama June’s Scandalous Relationships

Three of Mama June’s baby daddies have spent time behind bars and one is a registered sex offender. Honey Boo Boo’s dad, Mike “Sugar Bear” Thompson received a five-year sentence for burgling several campsites and setting fire to at least one camper in 1998. Mike Anthony, who is the father of Jessica “Chubbs,” is a registered sex offender and served more than two years for the sexual exploitation of a child over the internet and was also charged with the distribution of bad checks and shoplifting at Walmart. David Dunn, father of Anna “Chickadee,” also went to prison for stealing a handgun and cigarettes. Mama June also dated another registered sex offender, Mark McDaniel, who went to prison for molesting her daughter Anna. The former reality TV mom has insisted that McDaniel did not abuse her daughter, but Anna has gone on record refuting that. Mama June’s relationship with McDaniel ultimately led to Here Comes Honey Boo Boo being cancelled.

2. Feeding Chickadee’s Baby Pop

Lauryn “Pumpkin” was caught on camera at the Sparkle & Shine Pageant dipping her niece Kaitlyn’s pacifier in a Mountain Dew energy drink before putting it in her mouth.

1. Sugar Bear Cheats on Mama June

Mama June and Mike “Sugar Bear” Thompson split in September 2014 after she reportedly discovered his online dating profiles. It was later revealed that he had cheated on her with a coworker’s wife when the former couple tried to repair their relationship on Marriage Boot Camp. It was during this reality TV stint that it came out that Sugar Bear had cheated on her with both men and women. Mama June had already suspected that he had been experimenting with men because she had found pictures on his phone of “guy’s private parts.”
