(NEW YORK) — Lauren Bacall, the legendary actress and former wife of Humphrey Bogart, died Tuesday in New York City, ABC News has confirmed. She was 89 years old.

Bogart’s estate tweeted the news Tuesday evening, writing, “With deep sorrow, yet with great gratitude for her amazing life, we confirm the passing of Lauren Bacall.”

The husky-voiced actress, whose birth name was Betty Joan Perske, starred as a 19-year-old opposite the much older Bogart in her first film, 1944’s To Have and Have Not. Over the next few years, the two — who married in 1945 — appeared in the films The Big Sleep, Dark Passage and Key Largo.

In the ensuing decades, Bacall starred in Designing Woman, The Gift of Love, Shock Treatment, Sex and the Single Girl, Murder on the Orient Express and The Shootist, among other films. More recently, she worked on the movies Dogville and The Forger, and on the TV shows The Sopranos and Family Guy.

Despite the numerous credits to her name, Bacall was only nominated for an Oscar once — for playing Barbra Streisand’s mother in the 1996 film The Mirror Has Two Faces. She received an honorary Oscar in 2009.

Bacall also won two Tony Awards during her career, and was a recipient of the Kennedy Center Honors. In 1999, the American Film Institute named her one of the top 25 greatest female screen legends of all time.

Bacall was married to Bogart until 1957, when he died of cancer. They had two children.

After a short-lived engagement to Frank Sinatra following Bogart’s death, Bacall married Oscar winner Jason Robards in 1961. The couple had one child, actor Sam Robards, before divorcing in 1969.
