As networks continue to bring audiences new and exciting series, it also means that some long-running popular series begin to wind down. While every television season marks the beginning and end of several shows, early 2019 has brought the announcements for the final seasons of some of TV’s biggest shows and fans are shocked! As we head into the 2019 and 2020 television seasons, here are all the popular series that are quickly coming to an end:
21. One Day At a Time
After receiving praise from both fans and critics, Netflix cancelled the One Day at a Time revival in mid-March 2019, absolutely shocking viewers and leaving many disappointed. The cast and crew were quick to open up about their surprise and heartbreak over not being picked up for a fourth season, while many are stunned that the season three finale now serves as the series finale. “It’s been a great honor to work with the legendary Norman Lear on One Day at a Time. I’ve personally spoken with Norman and co-creators Gloria Calderón Kellett and Mike Royce to express my gratitude to them, all the writers, the dedicated crew and the cast, including the brilliant Justina Machado and dazzling Rita Moreno, for creating a series with such humor, heart and humanity,” Netflix chief content officer Ted Sarandos said Thursday in a rare cancellation statement. “This was a very difficult decision, and we’re thankful to all the fans who’ve supported the series, our partners at Sony and all the critics who embraced it. While it’s disappointing that more viewers didn’t discover One Day at a Time, I believe the series will stand the test of time.” Shortly following its cancellation, One Day at a Time was revived by Pop TV, which made it the first Netflix series that was cancelled only to be revived by a cable network.

20. Gotham
In early 2018, Fox already warned fans that the Batman origin series Gotham would be coming to an end. “The fifth and final season will wrap up this unique origin story of the great DC Comics Super-Villains and vigilantes, which revealed an entirely new chapter that has never been told,” Fox said. Season five of Gotham began airing in early January 2019 and is set to end in March 2019.

19. Game of Thrones
Many fans can’t believe that in what seems like no time at all, Game of Thrones is coming to an end! The series, which took over television, will be ending with its eighth and final season. After anxious waiting it was finally confirmed that season eight of Game of Thrones would be returning for its final season on April 14, 2019. Season eight will consist of six episodes before the series comes to an end in late March or early June 2019. Of course, the series is already in talks for a spinoff called The Long Night which will serve as a prequel to the Game of Thrones series. The Long Night is set to start filming in the summer of 2019 and should air on HBO beginning sometime in 2020.

18. The Big Bang Theory
2019 is marking the end of one of TV’s biggest shows as fans prepare to say goodbye to The Big Bang Theory. Rumors of cancelation have plagued the show since around season eight before CBS announced it was in talks to extend the show to season 14. It was a huge shock then when instead it was announced that The Big Bang Theory would be ending with its twelfth season. The announcement came only one month before the season’s September 2018 premiere with CBS, Warner Bros. TV and Chuck Lorre Productions sharing: “We are forever grateful to our fans for their support of The Big Bang Theory during the past twelve seasons. We, along with the cast, writers and crew, are extremely appreciative of the show’s success and aim to deliver a final season, and series finale, that will bring The Big Bang Theory to an epic creative close.” The Big Bang Theory will officially sign off in mid-May 2019.

17. Jane the Virgin
After a groundbreaking presence on television along with several awards wins, The CW’s Jane the Virgin is coming to an end with its fifth season. Season four came to a close with some epic cliffhangers and the creators promised to wrap all those up before ending the series, and for those upset that the show is ending after only five seasons, there is already talks of a spinoff! According to Variety, “The official plot details for the spinoff are being kept under wraps, but it is known that it will not be based on any characters currently appearing on Jane the Virgin. According to sources, the series will be an anthology with each season based on a fictional novel written by Jane Villanueva (Rodriguez), with Rodriguez potentially onboard to narrate.” The fifth and final season is set to premiere on March 27, 2019 and will run 19 episodes before ending in the summer.

16. Veep
After years of critical acclaim and awards, Veep is ending with its seventh season. In the fall of 2017, star Julia Louis-Dreyfus and showrunner David Mandel acknowledged that the show had reached its natural stopping point, and did not want to continue just to create episodes for the sake of it. Although season seven had to be briefly delayed by Louis-Dreyfus’ breast cancer diagnosis, the actress completed her treatment and returned to finish up the series. The seventh season is set to begin to air in the spring of 2019 and will only consist of seven episodes before bringing the series to an end in May 2019.

15. Orange is the New Black
Orange is the New Black has had several very successful seasons on Netflix, but in 2018 the streaming giant confirmed that the show would be ending with season seven. “After seven seasons, it’s time to be released from prison,” said series creator Jenji Cohan in a statement. “I will miss all the badass ladies of Litchfield and the incredible crew we’ve worked with. My heart is orange but… fade to black.” While no exact date has been announced, Orange is the New Black‘s final season is expected to begin airing in the summer of 2019.

14. Suits
Suits will be closing all its cases after season nine. It was announced in January 2019 that the popular USA Network legal drama was renewed for a ninth and final season, with Aaron Korsh sharing a sentimental message in which he thanked the fans, saying in part, “And last but never least, to the fans who have stuck with the Suits family through thick and thin, through can-openers and flashbacks – thank you for always speaking your mind. Without you, I might start to think I’m getting the hang of this writing thing. And once that happens, nobody wins. I look forward to enraging and hopefully sometimes delighting you with the final episodes.” The series ending wasn’t a total shock however as it had been winding down since the loss of two main stars Patrick J. Adams and Meghan Markle back in season seven, and of course the announcement that Gina Torres would be starring in the spinoff Pearson, focused on her popular character Jessica Pearson. The final season of Suits is expected to premiere in the summer of 2019.

13. The Affair
The Affair was one of TV’s most buzzed about series when it first started, and now the Showtime drama is coming to an end with its fifth season. Although it seems the show’s end was expected, many did not see it coming that star Ruth Wilson would not take part. Her sudden exit from the critically acclaimed series has sparked a lot of debate and Wilson has spoken out stating that it isn’t what she wanted. Regardless, the show will go on for its fifth and final season without Wilson beginning in August 2019 and will conclude on October 27, 2019.

12. Homeland
It is difficult for even the biggest shows to continue on after one of the main stars decides to exit, and Homeland has decided not to try to go on without Claire Danes. After Danes revealed she no longer wanted to work on the series past season eight, the network decided to cancel the show. Showrunner Alex Gansa reassured fans that just because it is ending, it doesn’t mean things are going to be easy in season eight. “Season 8 will be overseas somewhere. We get to play a story with larger national stakes in season 7 and we’ll go back to a smaller intelligence-based season in 8.” He also stated, “We’re going to start fresh in season 8 and probably do a fairly big time jump between 7 and 8 and put any Trump parallels behind us” and “We’ll tell a very contained story, hopefully in Israel.” The eighth and final season of Homeland premieres in February 2020 and will consist of 12 episodes before coming to an end.
11
11. Will & Grace
In September 2017, NBC had one of the most buzzed about TV revivals yet when Will & Grace was brought back for a ninth season over a decade since the series concluded in 2006 after eight seasons. Following three seasons of the revival, it will be time to say goodbye to the gang again as season 11 will be the last. “We think of the Will & Grace reboot episodes the way Karen Walker thinks of martinis – 51 is not enough, 53 is too many. That is why, after consulting with the cast, we all have decided this will be the final season,” executive producers Max Mutchnick, David Kohan, and James Burrows said in a statement. “They say you can’t go home again, but we did. And now, three seasons and 52 episodes later, we’re even more proud of something we never thought we’d get a chance to do again. We have had a once-in-a-lifetime experience twice. And for that, we owe a double debt of gratitude to NBC, this show’s supportive and caring home since day one.” The final season will consist of 18 episodes and is slated to air and conclude in 2020.

10. How to Get Away With Murder
In May 2019, ABC renewed the hit series How to Get Away with Murder for a sixth season which elated fans, but only months later it was announced that the sixth season would be the last. “Deciding to end this series was a brutal decision, but ultimately the story tells you what to do — as it did here. For me, Annalise Keating’s journey has always had a clear ending. Knowing I have 15 episodes left to finish her story, and the chance to give all the characters their own killer endings, is a gift rarely given to a series creator and I’m grateful to ABC and ABC Studios for the opportunity and creative freedom,” creator Peter Nowalk said. The sixth and final season premieres on September 26, 2019 before concluding in the spring.

9. Modern Family
After an impressive run as one of TV’s most successful family comedies, Modern Family is ending with its eleventh season. In early February, ABC announced that the series had been renewed for one more season, but that would be it. “For 10 years, our characters have bravely faced turning points in life and moved through them to great personal enrichment; we have chosen a different path by doing one more season of Modern Family,” co-creator Christopher Lloyd quipped in a statement, while co-creator Steve Levitan added: “Even after 10 years together, we realized there are still some things our writers don’t yet know about each other’s sex lives.” The eleventh and final season of Modern Family is expected to premiere in September of 2019 meaning it will be officially ending in 2020.

8. Empire
After an incredibly dramatic time off-screen due to cast issues at the end of season five, Fox decided to bring Empire back for a sixth season but it will be its last. “We’re turning the final season of Empire into a large television event. If you look at what we’re doing with Empire… we really are trying to go out guns a-blazing,” Charlie Collier, CEO of Fox Entertainment, told reporters on a press call Monday morning. “One of the great benefits of announcing a final season is to allow the fans to lean in and to have the ending they deserve, and that’s everything we’re trying to do with this iconic series. Six years is a pretty remarkable run for a drama series and we feel good about it.” The final season will premiere on September 24, 2019 and is slated to end in the spring of 2020.
15
7. Madam Secretary
After six seasons, Madam Secretary will be coming to an end with a shorter season. Shortly after CBS ordered a new season of the drama, the network announced that it would be show’s last and would only consist of 10 episodes. “They’re going to do 10 episodes in the fall and tie up the storyline,” CBS entertainment president Kelly Kahl reportedly said. “We’re happy and excited to do that for Téa, the cast and the audience.” Madam Secretary season six aims to premiere on October 6, 2019 and will conclude late in the year or early 2020.

6. Fuller House
It is time to say goodbye to the Tanners…again! In late January 2019, Netflix announced that the popular Full House spinoff series Fuller House had been renewed for a fifth and final season. Along with the announcement, the streaming service also released an emotional farewell video in which Candace Cameron Bure’s DJ Tanner-Fuller can be heard saying, “We’re saving the best for last.” The final season is expected to be released on Netflix in late 2019.

5. The Good Place
After its debut in 2016, The Good Place quickly became a critically acclaimed series that seemed to have a lasting place on television. Unfortunately, the show’s creator never intended that to be the case. In early June, 2019 creator Mike Schur revealed that the series would be ending after its fourth season. “After The Good Place was picked up for season 2, the writing staff and I began to map out, as best we could, the trajectory of the show,” he said. “Given the ideas we wanted to explore, and the pace at which we wanted to present those ideas, I began to feel like four seasons – just over 50 episodes – was the right lifespan. At times over the past few years we’ve been tempted to go beyond four seasons, but mostly because making this show is a rare, creatively fulfilling joy, and at the end of the day, we don’t want to tread water just because the water is so warm and pleasant. As such, the upcoming fourth season will be our last.” The last season will premiere in the fall of 2019 and end either by the end of the year or early 2020.

4. The Ranch
Many weren’t sure that The Ranch was going to last very long after the abrupt exit of Danny Masterson, and now it has been confirmed the series will end on in 2020. Star and executive producer Ashton Kutcher revealed in early June that the show’s fourth season would be its last. “@theranchnetflix is coming to an end, but not just yet. We’re excited to bring you the final 20 episodes — 10 streaming later this year (2019) on @netflix, and then 10 more in 2020,” he captioned a cast photo featuring himself and costars Dax Shepard, Sam Elliott and Elisha Cuthbert. “Stay tuned!”

3. Arrow
Fans of The CW’s superhero series Arrow were stunned when it was announced in early March that the series would be ending with its eighth season. Star Stephen Amell revealed that the final season would only consist of 10 episodes which is a dramatic cut from the 22 episode seasons the show usually produces. “Playing Oliver Queen has been the greatest professional experience of my life…but you can’t be a vigilante forever,” Amell tweeted. “Arrow will return for a final run of 10 episodes this Fall. There’s so much to say… for now I just want to say thank you.” The eighth and final season of Arrow will premiere in the fall of 2019 and run for 10 episodes before coming to an end either shortly before the end of the year or in early 2020.
20
2. Supernatural
After an unprecedented run as a sci-fi/fantasy series, The CW’s Supernatural will be coming to an end in 2020. The cast of the series came together on March 23, 2019 to reveal that the show’s fifteenth season would be its last. “We have some big news that we wanted y’all to hear from us,” Jared Padalecki said in a video shared on social media with Ackles delivering the kicker: “We just told the crew that though we’re very, very excited about moving into our 15th season, it will be our last…We wanted you to hear from us that though we’re excited about net year, it will be the finale, the big grand finale of an institution.” Season 15 of Supernatural is set to air in October 2019 before coming to an end in the spring of 2020 if it goes through with a full 23 episode season.

1. Criminal Minds
One of the saddest final season announcements came on Thursday, January 10 when CBS announced that they had renewed Criminal Minds for a fifteenth season, but it would be the last one. The network also tweeted: “Next, get ready for a momentous ride: Season 15 will be our epic final season.” To break fans’ hearts even more, CBS also confirmed that season 15 would only feature 10 episodes which is down from 15 in season 14 and for the first 13 episodes the series featured 20-26 episodes per season. “It is the quintessential CBS hit. We are so proud to have aired it,” said Amy Reisenbach, CBS’ EVP current programs.“It speaks to everything we do best, which is air quality television. It’s been successful not only on air but online, in syndication, internationally for ABC (Studios).” The final season of Criminal Minds consisting of only 10 episodes was delayed until 2020.
