Summertime Sadness: 8 Celeb Couples Who Split This Summer

Published on September 23, 2015.

Summer 2015 has NOT been the summer of love! We’re starting to feel hopeless about romance, since so many great celebrity couples decided to call it quits this summer. Here are our picks for the eight celebrity breakups that have broken our hearts the most:

8. Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner

One of the most high-profile breakups of the summer was definitely the split between Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner. They first fell in love on the set of the film Daredevil in 2003, then began dating in 2004 and got married in 2005. In their ten years together, they had three kids: Seraphina, Violet and Samuel, and were often vocal about how much they cared about each other. (Perhaps in retrospect we should have known something was wrong when Ben talked about how their marriage was “work” in his Best Picture Oscar speech for Argo.) Soon all we heard about was how they were spending more and more time apart, how Ben was gambling  in Vegas, and how he was developing some kind of relationship with their nanny, Christine Ouzounian. On June 20, they announced they were divorcing and now they’ve both been spotted without their wedding rings. Bummer!

7. Chad Kroeger and Avril Lavigne

Nickelback’s Chad Kroeger and Avril Lavigne were only married for two years, but these two weird Canadian musicians had given us hope. Avril, 30, and Chad, 40, got married in July 2013 after an engagement that involved a massive, jealousy-inducing ring. Avril made a statement on Instagram earlier this month: “It is with heavy hearts that Chad and I announce our separation today. Through not only the marriage, but the music as well, we’ve created many unforgettable moments. We are still, and forever will be, the best of friends, and will always care deeply for each other. To all our family, friends and fans, thank you sincerely for the support.” We wonder if infidelity had something to do with it, since Chad was spotted partying at a club in Miami with another woman before the split.

6. Blake Shelton and Miranda Lambert

Another music couple gone kaput is Blake Shelton and Miranda Lambert, who announced this summer that they were divorcing after four years of marriage. “This is not the future we envisioned,” the couple said in a statement to Us Weekly. “And it is with heavy hearts that we move forward separately. We are real people, with real lives, with real families, friends and colleagues. Therefore, we kindly ask for privacy and compassion concerning this very personal matter.” Blake, 39, and Miranda, 31, first met during an onstage duet at CMT’s 100 Greatest Duets Concert back in 2005, when Blake was still married to his first wife, Kaynette Gern. “Looking back on that, I was falling in love with her, right there on stage,” Blake said of the performance. They eventually started dating and got engaged in 2010. But things are definitively over now: their divorce was finalized just hours after they announced their split.

5. Megan Fox and Brian Austin Green

We were surprised to hear that Megan Fox and Brian Austin Green decided to break up, since they were together for 11 years. Megan was just 18 when she met Brian, who is 12 years her senior, on the set of the ABC sitcom Hope & Faith. They began dating, briefly split in 2009 because she wasn’t ready for marriage, and then got back together (they finally tied the knot in 2010 in Hawaii). They have two sons together: Noah, 2, and Bodhi, 18 months. In interviews, they often used exalted language when speaking about each other; In its 2013 issue, Megan told Marie Claire UK, “I just think we got lucky. I believe he’s my soul mate.” The good news for Megan is that she’s only 29: she still has her whole life ahead of her!

4. Kourtney Kardashian and Scott Disick

Reality stars Kourtney Kardashian and Scott Disick were never married, but we thought they were in it for the long haul, since they have been together for nine years — which is longer than Khloe and Lamar or Kim and Kanye — and they have three children together: Mason, Penelope and Reign (Kourtney is seeking sole custody of the children). But Kourtney and Scott split up in July, after photos surfaced of Scott partying with other women. Kourtney has taken to social media to post cryptic things about her ex, such as the bible verse, “Proverbs 4:23 ‘Above all else, guard your heart, for it is the wellspring of life,'” which she shared on Twitter. meanwhile, Scott told reporters on a red carpet in Las Vegas in July, “[I’m] just taking it one day at a time. With everything going on right now, I need to be positive for myself.”

3. Jon Hamm and Jennifer Westfeldt

Jon Hamm and Jennifer Westfeldt broke up earlier this month after having been together for eighteen years. This year was a particularly rock year for the couple. Hamm went to rehab for alcohol abuse with Westfeldt’s support; however, leading up the breakup, they were rumored to have already broken up. Some say that Hamm’s demons and his need for a mother figure are what doomed the relationship while others have suggested it was his desire for children and her refusal that did them in.

2. Kermit and Miss Piggy

Okay, we know they’re not real people, but when it was announced that Kermit and Miss Piggy were breaking up, we were devastated. Apparently, Kermit has a new woman in his life: Denise. “Sheesh. I can’t believe I already have to do this again… Here is the official statement on my relationship status,” Kermit wrote on Twitter. “While I prefer to keep my personal life private, this is Hollywood, so who am I kidding? It is true that I am dating again. However, at this time no woman–pig or otherwise–is my official ‘new girlfriend’. We are simply close friends.” Well, what about Miss Piggy? We say you can do better than Kermit, girl! A new Muppets show will premiere on Tues Sept 22 at 8/7c on ABC.

1. Gwen Stefani and Gavin Rossdale

Another celebrity breakup that really shocked us was that of No Doubt singer Gwen Stefani and Bush rocker Gavin Rossdale. On August 3, the couple released a statement that they were splitting after 13 years of marriage: “While the two of us have come to the mutual decision that we will no longer be partners in marriage, we remain partners in parenthood and are committed to jointly raising our three sons in a happy and healthy environment,” they told Us Weekly. “To that end, we respectfully request privacy from the media during this time.” Gwen and Gavin first met in 1995 when their bands went on tour together. They got married in 2002 and have three sons together: Kingston, Zuma and Apollo. Like many other celebs, they cited irreconcilable differences as the reason for their breakup.
