This year’s British Academy Film awards, best known as the BAFTAs, were a sea of black as star after star stepped out wearing the dark hue in honour of the #TimesUp movement. The epic display of fashion symbolized a shift in the entertainment industry and an effort to end the gender inequality prevalent in Hollywood. Since the color palette was all black, it was all the more simple to spot a standout dress – whether it be for the worst or for the best. Follow along for 12 of the worst-dressed stars from last night’s BAFTA awards:
12. Ruth Wilson
We’re all for masculine dressing on the red carpet, but Ruth Wilson’s tuxedo look lacked softness and came across a little harsh. Her look featured sharp lines which were even more exaggerated since she buttoned up the jacket all the way. The whole look came across somewhat stifling and the gold strappy shoes definitely clashed with all the stiff tailoring.

11. Haley Bennett
Haley Bennett’s attempt to stand out in the sea of black with this golden number was an unfortunate miss. Her look featured head to toe beading that didn’t seem to flow together and had too much happening at once. We would have much preferred to see Bennett in a dress that had subtle beading or glitter rather than the overkill of sparkle that this look seemed to exude.

10. Helena Bonham Carter
Helena Bonham Carter’s silk ruched dress wasn’t entirely awful, but her hair and bag were definitely quite questionable. We love the draping and luxe silk texture of her dress, but her unruly updo made her outfit appear across messy and confusing. To make matters worse, her handbag stood out for all the wrong reasons and the embroidered “Queen” logo made everything appear a little juvenile and tacky.

9. Natalie Dormer
Natalie Dormer is absolutely stunning, but unfortunately, her look from this year’s BAFTA awards seemed to somewhat drown her. Dormer is quite petite and slim, which made her figure appear a little lost in all the layers of tulle and organza. We love dramatic draping, but this particular look didn’t quite hit the trend the way we had hoped.

8. Leslie Bibb
Column-style dresses are definitely a tricky look to pull off, and unfortunately, Leslie Bibb missed the mark with her attempt at the trend. Her BAFTA look featured a glittering, tassel skirt that seemed awkward and out of place. The shape definitely could have worked with her slender build, yet the distracting blue glitter detailing was difficult to overlook.
6
7. Gemma Arterton
Gemma Arterton stepped out at last night’s BAFTA awards wearing this one-shoulder pleated number that definitely stood out in the crowd! Although we love the idea that Arterton was aiming for with the dramatic pleating, we’re not entirely sure it worked for her. The pleats seemed to add unnecessary volume to all the wrong places and the one-shoulder neckline came across as outdated.

6. Octavia Spencer
Octavia Spencer is typically a fashion queen on the red carpet, which is why we were a little disappointed with her sparkling number from this year’s BAFTA awards The combination of the fluttering sleeves, layers of beading and mesh neckline didn’t quite flow together. We would have much preferred her in a look that was a little more simple than distracting.

5. Annette Bening
Annette Bening’s look from this year’s BAFTA awards was an unfortunate fashion miss! The column-style dress featured a full-fringe skirt and mesh detailing along the chest and shoulders. The mesh added a casual-factor to her look that we couldn’t quite support and the full fringe skirt made the look appear a little messy and stifling.

4. Cressida Bonas
It seems that column-style dresses were a huge trend on the red carpet at this year’s BAFTAs, but unfortunately this look is so tricky to pull off perfectly that many stars fell victim to an unfortunate fashion miss. Cressida Jones stepped out wearing this embellished column dress that was definitely quite bizarre. The look featured messy, colorful tassels throughout and sheer paneling on the skirt that drew unwanted attention.
10
3. Karen Gillen
Karen Gillen stepped out on the BAFTA red carpet wearing a high-low dress with balloon-style sleeves and a sheer mesh neckline. The high-low cut definitely showed off Gillen’s long legs, but the unflattering sleeves of this dress were something that we couldn’t quite overlook. The voluminous sleeves made the dress appear messy and distracted from the otherwise quite sophisticated look of the gown.
11
2. Gugu Mbatha-Raw
Gugu Mbatha-Raw stepped out wearing a black and metallic number on last night’s BAFTA red carpet that looked quite uncomfortable and awkward. The sharp turtle-neck style neckline in combination with the chunky metallic beading came across a little stifling and overly sharp. We would have loved if this look had incorporated some softness with a tulle skirt or different neckline.
12
1. Allison Janney
Of all the looks from the 2018 BAFTA awards, Allison Janney’s look was undeniably the most disappointing. The star rocked quite a few hit red carpet looks during this year’s awards season, which is why we were all the more disappointed that her BAFTA look was definitely not one of them. The awkward silver detailing along the bodice was completely bizarre and made this look appear like something that belonged in a museum rather than the red carpet.
