Published on January 8, 2019. Updated January 24, 2019

The 2019 Golden Globes officially kicked off awards show season last night and the stars of Hollywood came together to grace the red carpet at the Beverly Hilton hotel. While many of the designer garments we saw left us in awe, there was also a handful that disappointed us. These are the stars that we had high expectations for, but whose looks didn’t meet our standard of expectations. Follow along as we retrace the most disappointing looks from this year’s Golden Globes:

20. Rachel Brosnahan

As much as we love Mrs. Maisel, we can’t say the same for this dress worn by Rachel Brosnahan on the Golden Globes red carpet! While the sunny yellow color and pleating were pretty, there really wasn’t much to it which was a little disappointing. We would have loved to see a little glitz or glam to amp this red carpet look up.

19. Elsie Fisher

15-year old Elsie Fisher definitely needs to switch stylists because this red corduroy look made her look much older than her age! We would have loved to see the talented young actress in a whimsical midi-length gown or youthful print, but this heavy suit seemed too heavy.

18. Emily Blunt

Fashion critics were on the fence about whether they were a fan of Emily Blunt’s lace dress for this year’s Golden Globes. We personally didn’t love it! While the sheer detailing along the bodice is pretty, we were disappointed with how ragged it looked on the hemline of the skirt.

17. Constance Wu

Crazy Rich Asians star Constance Wu left us quite conflicted about whether we loved or hated her dress. While the dainty shape and corset detailing were beautiful, the nude color seemed to wash her out. We also weren’t convinced that the orange sash was the best choice of color to pair with this look! Overall, we definitely had high expectations for Wu that unfortunately weren’t met with this look.

16. Kristin Cavallari

As someone with her own fashion line, we definitely have high expectations when The Hills alum Kristin Cavallari hits the red carpet. Unfortunately, we weren’t thrilled with her choice of dress for the 2019 Golden Globes. While the golden gown itself seems to flatter her in all the right places, there was one major detail we couldn’t overlook — how long the sleeves were! A simple trip to the tailor would have amped up this ill-fitting look dramatically.

15. Kaley Cuoco

While we love how relatable Kaley Cuoco was with her Golden Globes dress that featured pockets, we also aren’t totally sure about how we felt about this look on a whole. The white skirt and navy velvet top didn’t seem to flow together, especially with the oversized bow along the hip. We also weren’t the biggest fans of Cuoco’s after party look this year, which overall was quite disappointing for such a natural beauty!

14. Joanna Newson

Andy Samberg took center stage at this year’s Golden Globes where he co-hosting with Sandra Oh. Samberg walked the red carpet with his stunning wife, Joanna Newson, but we were admittedly quite confused with her choice of attire as an honorary guest. Her heart-embellished dress seemed over the top and somewhat distracted from Samberg’s big moment.

13. Rosamund Pike

Rosamund Pike has one of the most enviable bodies with her tall, slender physique, which is why her choice of attire for the Golden Globes left us quite disappointed. Pike could seemingly pull off any dress with her model-worthy figure, but the combination of the cutouts, mermaid skirt, and the sparkly jacket seemed like too much.

12. Melissa McCarthy

We absolutely love Melissa McCarthy, but we have to admit, we were quite disappointed with this purple look she wore on the Golden Globes red carpet. The dress had an overpowering silhouette with all the ruffles, tiers and star details which ended up detracting from her beauty rather than enhancing it.

11. Jessica Chastain

Burberry’s new artistic designer Riccardo Tisci made his red carpet debut with this look worn by Jessica Chastain at the Golden Globes. We have to admit, however, that we weren’t the biggest fans of the direction he chose to go with her look. While we love all the drama with the beading and corset detailing, it simply seemed to miss the mark when it came to using proportions that flattered Chastain’s figure. The corset seemed to hit her hips at the wrong spot and the draping along the skirt drowned her slender figure.

10. Elisabeth Moss

Elisabeth Moss just can’t seem to hit the mark when it comes to her red carpet fashion! The star opted for an unconventional dress for this year’s Golden Globes, but we didn’t think it was the most appropriate for the event, which left us disappointed. The look seemed much better suited for a holiday party or low key event than the glamorous Golden Globes red carpet.

9. Julianne Moore

Julianne Moore left us feeling a little let down when she stepped onto the Golden Globes red carpet this year. Her white Givenchy look featured a strange halter top that seemed to cut her below the hips at an unflattering height. We simply wish Moore had opted for something with a little more shape to it and proper proportions!

8. Anne Hathaway

Anne Hathaway is such a beauty that we always have high expectations for her when it comes to the red carpet! As much as we love cheetah print, we’re not sure it has a place for a glamorous A-list affair. Hathaway took a big risk when she stepped out at the Golden Globes wearing this bold full-length cheetah look. She definitely looks fierce in the Ellie Saab number, but overall it was quite the fashion misstep and disappointment.

7. Amber Heard

Aquaman star Amber Heard opted for a black and white monochrome look for this year’s Golden Globes. Typically we love a simple color palette like black and white, but this Monique Lhuillier gown seemed to miss the mark and left us disappointed. The contrast of the black and white was quite harsh and the entire dress didn’t seem to be the most flattering shape. Luckily, her hair and makeup looked absolutely stunning which somewhat made up for the dress mishap!

6. Debra Messing

Feathers are a huge trend this year in the world of fashion, but the key is to style the trend in good taste. We were excited to see this trend make its way onto the red carpet, but unfortunately, Messing’s look missed the mark when it came to feathers. The shape of the dress overwhelmed her figure and the combination of sparkles and feathers felt like too much.

5. Claire Foy

We were quite on the fence about whether we loved or hated Claire Foy’s sunny yellow Golden Globes look, but there was one deciding factor that pushed us against this number — the tailoring! How well a dress fits is one of the key factors to a red carpet look, and unfortunately, Foy’s look seemed to gape and fall loosely along the bust which wasn’t the most flattering.

4. Alison Brie

Alison Brie is another Golden Globes star that left us a little disappointed with her look! The star opted for a powder blue tulle dress that was sheer at the top and put her black bedazzled bra on full display. The revealing look seemed more suiting for a more casual awards show than the glamorous Golden Globes!

3. Amy Adams

Amy Adams was nominated for a Golden Globe at last night’s red carpet event, but she didn’t dress the part, which is why we were disappointed. Rather than an extravagant ballgown, Adams opted for a simple, blue off-the-shoulder dress. For such an exciting night, we were let down that Adams didn’t try to dazzle up her look a little more!

2. Lucy Liu

Elementary star Lucy Liu stepped out wearing a questionable ensemble for this year’s Golden Globes. The beautiful actress opted for a chaotic tulle dress that featured multi-color neon embellishment and a sheer cape. This look had the potential to be a beautiful fashi0n moment if it was just a little more simple, which is why we were all the more disappointed.

1. Janelle Monae

Janelle Monae is always experimental with her fashion, but we’re not sure her 2019 Golden Globes look was a risk well-rewarded. The Chanel look consisted of a tailored tweed dress with dramatic gold detailing and a white underlay that peaked out on her arms and legs. To make matters even more strange, she topped the look with a circular gold hat that definitely left us feeling a bit let down in the style department.
