Met Gala 2018: 12 Most Disappointing Looks

The first Monday of May always marks fashion’s biggest night of the year — the annual Met Gala! This year’s 2018 theme was “Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination” which inspired a slew of best-dressed fashion masterpieces inspired by Renaissance paintings, ethereal angels, and even the Pope himself! The Met Gala marks the one night of the year where stars can dress in the most outrageous outfit ever and be praised for it, so when a star steps out wearing something less than outstanding it’s always a little disappointing. Follow along for our roundup of all the stars who missed the mark with the theme or simply didn’t take advantage of their opportunity to bring an epic fashion moment to the Met Gala red carpet:

12. Bella Hadid

Bella Hadid is typically quite adventurous with her fashion, but her Met Gala look for this year seemed to miss the mark a little. The red carpet was filled with angelic chiffon and dramatic detailing, but Hadid stepped out in this slick black look that came across rather stifling and uncomfortable. Considering this bizarre look seemingly ignored the theme altogether, we were definitely feeling a little disappointed following Bella’s jaunt around the 2018 Met Gala red carpet.

11. Dakota Fanning

Dakota Fanning played it safe for this year’s Met Gala and donned a crisp white one-shoulder number designed by Miu Miu. Although we think she looks stunning in this soft, sparkling number, we also can’t help but feel quite disappointed with how simple she went. The purpose of the Costume Gala is to play with fashion and wear something extravagant, so Fanning’s look was admittedly quite dull among the sea of dramatic gowns surrounding her.

10. Kylie Jenner

Kylie Jenner has made headlines all year while she hid her pregnancy, but she’s proven she’s back and more fabulous than ever by taking the Met Gala red carpet! Although we can applaud Kylie for her enviable post-baby figure, we can’t help but wish she had opted for something more dramatic and captivating for her big Met Gala debut. The black gown was relatively simple and the skinny sunglasses seemed a little unnecessary.

9. Kendall Jenner

Similar to her sister Kylie, Kendall Jenner opted for something admittedly somewhat dull this year for the Met Gala! For this event, in particular, we love to see the creative fashion masterpieces and dramatic pieces, but Jenner’s white jumpsuit totally played it safe. Although the look is quite flattering, she seemed to ignore the theme altogether and we would have much preferred to see the slender model in something more glamorous and Met Gala appropriate.

8. Shailene Woodley

Shailene Woodley’s 2018 Met Gala look seemed to miss the mark on the theme completely this year. A look like this would have been much better suited for 2016’s technology-inspired theme, but for the Heavenly Bodies theme, this seemed quite a strange and random choice of outfit. Aside from issues with her outfit suiting the theme, the look also came across as quite stifling and Woodley looked totally uncomfortable and suffocated as she strutted the red carpet.

7. Zoe Kravitz

Zoe Kravitz went the sultry and sexy route with her 2018 Met Gala look and we have to admit she looks incredible! Despite this, we are a little disappointed that she wore a dress like this for the Met Gala when there was so much potential for an epic fashion moment. The look didn’t bring the “wow” factor that some of the others did and definitely got a little lost among the sea of dresses. Kravitz is one of Hollywood’s leading fashionistas, so we were quite disappointed with this basic black lace look.

6. Salma Hayek

Salma Hayek always brings the drama when it comes to the Met Gala, and basically every other red carpet for that matter. Since she’s such an icon on the red carpet, this woodland scenery dress left us a little disappointed. The glimmering Altuzarra look was obviously intricate, but the shape was so simple and clean that it missed the mark on the drama factor that we love about the Met Gala.

5. Miley Cyrus

Miley Cyrus has had quite a few outrageous fashion moments during her time in the Hollywood scene, but in recent years she’s played it safe and totally shifted gears towards a more modest wardrobe. Although we appreciate the maturity of Miley’s sleek black dress, it was disappointing that she didn’t take advantage of the one event of the year where it’s acceptable to dress a little out-of-the-box.

4. Sienna Miller

Sienna Miller is a blonde bombshell with a stellar sense of style, but her look for the 2018 Met Gala definitely fell flat. Even for an awards show, this look seemed overly casual, but especially for the Met Gala where fashion takes center stage! The look was totally basic and an outfit more suited for a fancy dinner than the biggest fashion night of the year.

3. Claire Danes

Claire Danes is another Hollywood beauty whose 2018 Met Gala moment was seriously underwhelming. Although mixing red and pink was a huge color trend this year, the look was just overly simplistic and basic for the Met Gala. The color-blocked garment overlooked the Heavenly Bodies theme completely and lacked any wow factor to really make a statement.

2. Cindy Crawford

There’s no denying that supermodel Cindy Crawford looked like an absolute bombshell on last night’s Met Gala red carpet, but she was another star who skipped the theme completely. In a sea of sheer chiffon and golden sparkles, Crawford stood out in this fiery red number. We are actually huge fans of this dress in isolation, but admittedly it just didn’t work for the fashion-forward Met Gala.

1. Emma Stone

Of all the fashion disappointments from last nights’ Met Gala, we have to admit Emma Stone lead the troop! The low cut navy Louis Vuitton dress had nothing “heavenly” about it and although it was flattering on her fair complexion and strawberry locks, it was definitely not suited for the Met Gala. Emma Stone has made an endless list of best-dressed lists during her time in Hollywood, which is why this navy look was all the more disappointing.
