The first Monday of May is the one event of the year where it’s acceptable, and praised, for celebrities to dress up in the most extravagant outfits possible. The Met Gala brings together art and fashion for an event where designers are able to create masterpieces that will often make history as some of the most epic fashion moments of all time. This year was no different and 2018’s Met Gala theme of “Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination” brought some of the Met Gala’s most iconic fashion moments we’ve ever seen. Follow along as we recall 12 of the most outrageous looks from the 2018 Met Gala:

12. Frances McDormand

Frances McDormand wore a work of art on her head for this year’s 2018 Met Gala! The Valentino design was totally epic and featured an oversized and completely unique floral headpiece which veiled most of her face. The turquoise look was extravagant, to say the least, but that’s exactly what’s expected of the outfits for the daring and experimental Met Gala.

11. Madonna

Pop icon Madonna is seriously bold when it comes to her fashion, so the Met Gala is exactly where she thrives. She took the theme of “Heavenly Bodies” to her own interpretation and rocked a gothic-inspired black satin dress designed by Paul Gaultier. The dress itself wasn’t that extreme, but the accessories of the cross-embellished crown and veil really brought the drama and made heads turn.

10. Rita Ora

Rita Ora brought the glamour with her Met Gala look this year with her semi-sheer dramatic black number. The outfit was designed by Prada and was both elegant and extravagant in the most Met Gala-appropriate way. The multi-color embellishment brought visual interest to an otherwise quite simple black tulle gown, but the cascading train, elbow-length gloves and oversized headpiece elevated her look into a work of art.

9. Cara Delevingne

Cara Delevingne was another star who brought an outrageous look to the 2018 Met Gala red carpet! Her dress featured dramatic sheer paneling and an intricate lattice-pattern throughout, but the real showstopper was the bold crown she wore which veiled her face and made Cara nearly unrecognizable. Whether we love or hate this look is undetermined, but one thing for sure is that it is definitely outrageous!

8. Zendaya

Zendaya is one of Hollywood’s leading fashionistas, so fans had high expectations for her Met Gala appearance. Her armored look was allegedly inspired by one of Catholicism’s biggest icons: Saint Joan of Arc. Her metallic Versace gown nailed the theme from the spike detailing, heavy armor and the cropped wig which perfectly mimicked The Maid of Orleans’ infamous auburn locks.

7. Solange

Solange is known for her outrageous Met Gala looks and 2018 was no different! Her look made everyone pause and admire for her ability to break boundaries in a hardcore European theme by rocking a durag under a halo headpiece. The outfit itself also brought the drama with its high-shine black texture and sculptural skirt that looked like something straight out of a museum.

6. Diane Kruger

Diane Kruger wore a show-stopping aquamarine number designed by Prabal Gurung for this year’s 2018 Met Gala. The look was one of the few blue dresses of the evening, which made her stand out even more, but the dramatic high-low cut of the dress was truly breathtaking. We love all the ruffles and ruching trailing down the train and the intricate silver stitching in combination with her pearl headpiece was totally captivating.

Blake Lively stole the show at last night’s Met Gala with this jaw-dropping number that was arguably the most fabulous of the entire evening. Her stylist is a clear pro when it comes to Met Gala dressing and perfectly matched Lively’s dress to the carpet, as she has done for other years as well. The dress made for one of the most iconic photo opportunities we’ve ever seen and we are awe-struck by the intricate regal detailing of this ruby red number which reportedly took over 600 hours to complete.
