Despite all the changes in the world in 2020, the royal family has still had quite a busy year. Meghan Markle and Prince Harry officially stepped down from their royal roles and Princess Beatrice quietly wed her husband in an intimate ceremony. As for Kate Middleton and Prince William, the duo have tried their best to stay involved in the community with Zoom events and socially distanced visits. Throughout it all, there have certainly been some memorable royal fashion moments that are worthy of note. Follow along as we roundup the royal family’s fashion hits and misses of 2020.
15. Hit: Kate Middleton, March 9th
One of the last royal appearances before the world shut down was on March 9th when the entire family stepped out for Commonwealth Day. We absolutely love this coordinating maroon ensemble that Kate Middleton wore for the occasion. The velvet detailing and dramatic fascinator really elevated the entire look.

14. Miss: Kate Middleton, January 28th
Kate Middleton stepped out on January 28th wearing a charcoal grey tweed suit paired with black tights. This type of outfit is a classic Kate Middleton style at this point, but we can’t help but wish she’d have styled this in a more modern way to keep her look feeling fresh and trendy.

13. Hit: Meghan Markle, March 5th
No one can forget this gorgeous Meghan Markle fashion moment from March! The Duchess rocked a short sleeve, fitted dress in a lovely shade of teal. She styled the look with navy pumps, a marbled blue clutch and wore her hair in a sleek low ponytail.

12. Miss: Kate Middleton, July 5th
We have to admit we didn’t love this look Kate wore on July 5th to visit Queen Elizabeth Hospital in King’s Lynn. The blue printed dress felt a little too conservative and mature with the combination of the Peter Pan collar, oversized bow, and long sleeves.

11. Hit: Meghan Markle, January 7th
Meghan Markle dazzled when she stepped out in early January wearing this chocolate brown monochrome number. This color palette has been a major trend in 2020 and it’s clear that Markle was ahead of this trend when she rocked this sleek look at the beginning of the year. We love the combination of the silky satin with the cashmere sweater which feels very luxe.

10. Miss: Kate Middleton, February 11th
We felt this navy ensemble Kate wore this past February wasn’t the most flattering. The combination of the drop-waist skirt and peplum blazer felt like an odd combination that didn’t pull together as well as we would have hoped.

9. Hit: Queen Elizabeth, January 19th
Queen Elizabeth looked so gorgeous and on-trend when she stepped out on January 19th wearing this houndstooth patterned coat. The entire look felt very 2020 and was a nice change from her typical brightly colored ensembles.

8. Miss: February 2nd
We weren’t the biggest fans of this white and gold number worn by Kate Middleton for this year’s BAFTA awards. This event is typically one of the most high profile events of the year, which means it’s also one of the most anticipated royal fashion moments. Fans were simply a little disappointed to see Kate step onto the red carpet wearing a dress she’s repeated in the past.

7. Hit: Kate Middleton, March 9th
Kate Middleton absolutely dazzled when she stepped out in early March wearing this beaded cobalt blue number. We can’t get enough of this rich shade of blue on Middleton and all the stunning sparkling beading truly made for a show-stopping fashion moment.

6. Miss: Kate Middleton, January 5th
Kate Middleton stepped out in early January of this year with Prince William wearing a burgundy textured coat and blue fedora hat. While we actually really love this coat and all of its unique detailing, we can’t say the same about the hat she opted for. The fedora felt a little outdated and was so bold that it detracted from the rest of the look.

5. Hit: Kate Middleton, January 20th
Our favorite Kate Middleton look of the year has to be this crimson beaded number she wore at a Buckingham Palace reception in January. This look has so much beautiful detail to it with the sequin beading, mesh details, and tulle skirt. Not to mention how much this rich shade of red flatters her brunette hair and dark features!

4. Miss: Meghan Markle, March 9th
Meghan and Harry’s last appearance as senior members of the royal family occurred this past March on Commonwealth Day. For the occasion, Meghan opted for a monochrome emerald green ensemble. While we absolutely love this color on Meghan, we simply felt the shape of this dress with all of its layering felt a little overwhelming.

3. Hit: Princess Beatrice, July 19th
Princess Beatrice and Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi married in a secret, private ceremony this past July. For her wedding attire, Princess Beatrice dug through the archives of Queen Elizabeth’s wardrobe. The dress was a vintage ivory Peau de Soie taffeta dress by Norman Hartnell, who was the same designer who crafted Queen Elizabeth’s own WWII-era wedding gown. The queen has worn the ivory peau de soie taffeta dress on multiple occasions throughout her royal reign.

2. Miss: Kate Middleton, March 3rd
Kate Middleton missed the mark with this bold look she wore on the royal Ireland tour this past March. While we love this rich shade of green on her, the pattern felt a little too busy, especially in combination with the dramatic peplum shape.

1. Hit: Meghan Markle, March 7th
One of the most show-stopping royal fashion moments this year was when Meghan Markle stepped out with Prince Harry for the Mouttenbatten Music Festival in March. The Duchess went all out with her fashion by opting for a cherry red dress designed by Safiyaa which featured a sleek shape and dramatic cape detail. She accessorized with Aquazzura pumps, a satin Manolo Blahnik clutch bag, matching red heels, and bold dangling earrings.
