Red Carpet Moments That Disappointed Us In 2019

Published on December 3, 2019.

2019 was a huge year when it came to red carpet fashion. We saw quite a few experimental looks this year, but unfortunately, some were risks that weren’t well rewarded! There were many stars, from the Royals to Hollywood A-listers, that left us disappointed this year with some of their more anticipated looks. These moments are often from stars that are consistently well-dressed, and then step out wearing something questionable that is far less exciting than expected. Follow along as we recall a few of the most disappointing fashion moments of 2019:

62. Regina King, American Music Awards

Regina King is typically a red carpet all-star, which is why we were so disappointed with her fashion miss at the 2019 American Music Awards. While the dress itself isn’t too bad with the sparkling black texture and keyhole cutout, we couldn’t get past her sharply styled bangs which made the whole look feel almost costume-like.

61. Shania Twain, American Music Awards

Shania Twain certainly stole the show with her final performance at the AMAs this year, but we can’t say we loved her red carpet look when she first stepped out at the awards show! This look had a lot going on from the satin top to the oversized sleeves to the tulle train to the sequin skirt.

60. Christina Aguilera, American Music Awards

Christina Aguilera definitely went the experimental route with her look for the AMAs this year, but we can’t say we were the biggest fans! The white beaded dress had quite a lot going on at once from the oversized shoulders to the bold belt to the strange hood.

59. Kesha, American Music Awards

Kesha had an unfortunate fashion miss at this year’s American Music Awards where she opted for a printed Versace number that featured a wrap waist and matching sock boots. This look felt quite over the top and heavy in our opinion!

58. Halsey, American Music Awards

Halsey stepped out at the American Music Awards this year wearing a ruffled multi-color number that we, unfortunately, didn’t love! It had a lot happening at once with the rainbow of colors and heavy texture, and even more so paired with her theatrical makeup and hair.

57. Halsey, CMAs

While we love the flattering shape of this dress that Halsey wore to the CMAs, we weren’t convinced by this floral print! The oversized rose embellishment felt so bold and dramatic that it detracted from the pretty off-the-shoulder neckline, which was unfortunate.

56. Carrie Underwood, CMAs

We are typically huge fans of everything Carrie Underwood wears; however, we felt her red carpet look for this year’s CMAs missed the mark! The gold embellishment was pretty against her blonde tresses, but the smokey blue tulle train felt over-the-top and out of place.

55. Maren Morris, CMAs

Maren Morris is absolutely stunning, but we have to admit we didn’t love this powder blue dress that she opted for at the 2019 CMAs. The skirt had far too much fabric for someone so petite!

54. Kacey Musgraves, CMAs

Kacey Musgraves had an unfortunate fashion miss at this year’s CMAs where she rocked a yellow metallic gown. This look had way too much happening at once from the feathers to the sequins to the bold colors!

53. Sarah Hyland, People’s Choice Awards

Sarah Hyland missed the mark at this year’s People’s Choice Awards when she stepped out wearing this tangerine dress with metallic beading. While this color is gorgeous against Hyland’s dark features, we can’t say we’re the biggest fans of the odd beading throughout.

52. Lucy Hale, People’s Choice Awards

While Lucy Hale’s look for the People’s Choice Awards wasn’t an obvious miss, we do have to admit it wasn’t the most exciting or unique. The simple asymmetrical satin number didn’t seem to fit her that well and bunched in the wrong places.

51. Kelsea Ballerini, People’s Choice Awards

Kelsea Ballerini missed the mark at this year’s People’s Choice Awards where she opted for a bubblegum pink tulle set. While we love this girly color on Ballerini, but all of the tulle ruffles definitely seemed quite distracting.

50. Gwen Stefani, People’s Choice Awards

Despite being honored with the fashion icon award, we have to admit we didn’t love Gwen Stefani’s look for the 2019 People’s Choice Awards. There was simply a lot happening at once with the ruffled texture of the dress, the text embroidered on the skirt, the fishnet tights and the long black gloves.

EPA/NINA PROMMER

49. Jennifer Lopez, Governors Awards

Jennifer Lopez hit the red carpet at the Governors Awards wearing a bright yellow satin dress which tied into a bow at the back. While this color is a true show-stopper, we’re not sure the shape of this dress worked with Lopez’s figure! The fabric seemed to drown her and was quite different than the shapely, hourglass dresses we’ve seen her wear in the past.

48. Saorise Ronan, Governors Awards

Saorise Ronan had an unfortunate fashion miss at this year’s Governors Awards where she stepped out wearing a gingham-printed ensemble. The shape of this dress seemed quite heavy with the oversized sleeves and high-neckline, which wasn’t the most flattering overall.

47. Kerry Washington, Emmys

While we can definitely appreciate a strong trouser moment on the red carpet, we weren’t totally convinced by this sequin look Kerry Washington wore at the Emmys. We’ve seen a look like this many times before so this simply didn’t feel refreshing or innovative in any way.

EPA/ETIENNE LAURENT

46. Laverne Cox, Emmys

We love when stars bring the drama to the red carpet with their fashion; however, this look worn by Laverne Cox was a little too bold for the Emmys in our opinion. A look like this would have been amazing for a more experimental event like the Met Gala!

45. Amy Adams, Emmys

We were quite let down by Amy Adams’ look for this year’s Emmy Awards. The strange embroidery and nude underlay weren’t the most flattering combination and the color scheme did nothing to highlight her complexion.

44. Kendall Jenner, Emmys

Kendall Jenner totally missed the mark with her look for this year’s Emmy Awards. The combination of the long sleeve latex top and the oversized floral print didn’t seem to work together. We did, however, love the shape of this dress which complimented her tall, slender figure.

(Photo by Alberto E. Rodriguez/Getty Images)

43. Gwyneth Paltrow, Emmys

Gwyneth Paltrow had an unfortunate fashion miss at this year’s Emmys where she stepped out wearing a black and white monochrome number with dramatic sleeves. While the dress itself isn’t so bad with the lovely sheer neckline and black and white color palette, we can’t overlook these feathered sleeves that seemed quite excessive in all honesty.

42. Bella Hadid, MTV VMAs

Bella Hadid is gorgeous, there is no doubt about that; however, the nude two-piece outfit with straps that she rocked at the 2019 MTV VMAs wasn’t the best choice. The proportions of this set weren’t the most flattering and this nude color did nothing for her complexion.

41. Kieran Shipka, MTV Movie & TV Awards

Kieran Shipka had an unfortunate fashion miss at this year’s MTV Movie & TV Awards where she stepped out wearing a mini-length logo Fendi dress. While we love the slim fit of this dress, the strange neon detailing and chunky shoes really detracted from the look.

40. Mischa Barton, MTV Movie & TV Awards

As happy as we were to see Mischa Barton back on the red carpet, we can’t say we were the biggest fans of her look for this year’s MTV Movie & TV Awards! The black sparkly number seemed to drown her figure among the excess of tulle and fabric.

Source: Press Association

39. Tessa Thompson, MTV Movie & TV Awards

Tessa Thompson wore an interesting look for this year’s MTV red carpet which consisted of an oversized blazer in an interesting texture that we felt missed the mark. From the drowning shape of the tuxedo to the strange hairstyle, we’d have to say this look of hers was an unfortunate miss.

Lionel Hahn/ABACAPRESS.COM

38. Jada Pinkett Smith, MTV Movie & TV Awards

Jada Pinkett Smith stepped out on the MTV red carpet wearing a silver sequined suit this year. While this look definitely fit her well and flattered her curves, we have to admit the full sequined look felt a little much. We would have much preferred some subtle sequin detailing rather than a full-blown suit.

37. Elisabeth Moss, MTV Movie & TV Awards

Elisabeth Moss stepped out on the MTV Awards red carpet wearing a velvet black minidress with one glaring detail: a dramatic snake trailing down the front. While we are huge fans of snakeskin detailing, we’re not sure how we feel about a full-blown snake on a red carpet dress!

36. Shailene Woodley, Cannes Film Festival

We were less than impressed by Shailene Woodley’s Dior look for the premiere of Rocketman at the Cannes Film Festival. We’re all for tuxedo-inspired looks on women, but this was a twist on the style that didn’t quite work.

(Photo by Pascal Le Segretain/Getty Images)

35. Margot Robbie, Cannes Film Festival

Margot Robbie stepped out wearing a questionable outfit at the Once Upon A Time In Hollywood premiere that unfortunately missed the mark. Her ensemble featured a pink bubble-style dress that was layered on top of loose-fitting black pants. A look like this definitely undercuts the famous French event known for its formality and glamour.

(Photo by Vittorio Zunino Celotto/Getty Images)

34. Carey Mulligan, Met Gala

Carey Mulligan stepped out wearing quite the bizarre look at the Met Gala this year. Not only did this look not seem to follow the theme, but the colors clashed and the bows seemed to detract from her look rather than appear “camp” in a good way.

33. Jennifer Lopez, Met Gala

Jennifer Lopez left us completely underwhelmed at this year’s Met Gala. A sparkling look like this is something we’ve seen a million times before on the red carpet regardless of whether it’s the Met Gala or not, which was quite disappointing. We also weren’t huge fans of the headpiece she wore.

(Photo by Dimitrios Kambouris/Getty Images for The Met Museum/Vogue)

32. Janelle Monae, Met Gala

Janelle Monae totally puzzled us with her Met Gala look this year which consisted of multiple top hats, eyeballs and clashing colors. We can definitely give her credit, however, for this ensemble being a work of art, but it definitely wasn’t our favorite.

31. Gwyneth Paltrow, Met Gala

Gwyneth Paltrow wore quite a disappointing look at this year’s Met Gala. While Paltrow is never one to wear anything too extravagant, this look was just way too simple to be on theme or impressive. It felt much better suited for the Academy Awards or Emmys, but even then, it’s still quite plain!

(Photo by John Shearer/Getty Images for THR)

30. Gigi Hadid, Met Gala

Gigi Hadid wore sadly one of the most disappointing looks from this year’s Met Gala! Gigi blew us away with her butterfly-inspired ensemble last year, which is why it was all the more disappointing to see her step out almost unrecognizable in this bizarre white and gold look.

29. Jennifer Hudson, Billboard Music Awards

Jennifer Hudson stepped out at this year’s Billboard Awards wearing quite a questionable look. While we don’t mind the blazer and trousers, the metallic fringe detail seemed quite distracting and unnecessary.

28. Halsey, Billboard Music Awards

Halsey is always quite bold when it comes to fashion, which is something we love about her! We have to admit, however, that we weren’t the biggest fans of this black and indigo look she wore to the Billboard Awards this year. From the flashy shade of purple to the heavy black lace, there was simply too much going on.

Source: Press Association

27. Jennifer Nettles, CMA Awards

Feathers are a huge trend this holiday season, but Jennifer Nettles definitely missed the mark with the style at this year’s CMA Awards. Rather than a feathered hemline or skirt, Nettles opted for a sheer blush dress with sporadic puffs of feathers throughout. Her look was definitely not one of our favorites, to say the least!

26. RaeLynn, CMA Awards

RaeLynn’s look for this year’s CMAs was undeniably one of the most disappointing of the entire event. While we love ruffles, we’re not sure this was the right way to go about the trend. The giant pink ruffle overwhelmed her body and hid her frame, which was an unfortunate fashion miss in our books.

25. Kacey Musgraves, ACM Awards

Kacey Musgraves is quite unpredictable when it comes to red carpet fashion, but we have to admit, we weren’t huge fans of this look she wore to the 2019 ACM awards. The ombre suit look seemed to overwhelm her figure and wasn’t the most flattering.

24. Nicole Kidman, ACM Awards

Nicole Kidman definitely wore one of the most bizarre looks of the evening at the 2019 ACM awards. Her look consisted of lace, sparkle and oversized sleeves, which combined altogether seemed like quite the eyesore.

EPA/NINA PROMMER

23. Olivia Munn, Critics’ Choice Awards

Olivia Munn had a highly questionable polka dot moment at the 2019 Critics’ Choice Awards. The star opted for a black and white look that was anything but simple. From the ruffles to the varying sized polka dots to the heavy sash, this look seemed to have everything, but not in a flattering way.

22. Maggie Gyllenhaal, Critics’ Choice Awards

We were quite puzzled when we saw Maggie Gyllenhaal’s dress of choice at the 2019 Critics’ Choice Awards. The silky Prada gown was an unflattering shade of light greenish-yellow and the sleeve detailing left many fashion critics quite underwhelmed.

21. Nicole Kidman, Critics’ Choice Awards

Nicole Kidman had an unfortunate miss at the 2019 Critics’ Choice Awards wearing a monochrome Armani Privé dress. While we love the sleek shape of this dress, the unsightly white ruffle along the skirt was quite distracting and unnecessary. Kidman tends to be unpredictable when it comes to her fashion, but we had higher expectations for the Critics’ Choice Awards after her stunning wine-colored Golden Globes look.

20. Lupita Nyong’o, SAG Awards

Lupita Nyong’o is typically always one of the best-dressed women when it comes to awards show fashion. She’s a trailblazer in the fashion industry, which is why we were all the more disappointed with her choice of attire for the SAG Awards. The top seemed to hit her at an unflattering height and the combination of the sheer skirt and structured top felt quite random and as if they didn’t properly flow together.

19. Emma Stone, SAG Awards

We have to admit we were quite disappointed with this look worn by Emma Stone at the 2019 SAG Awards. Firstly, the star was almost unrecognizable after dropping her signature red tresses and switching to a dark brunette. We also weren’t the biggest fans of her jumpsuit look that featured ill-fitting trousers and an asymmetrical neck detail that wasn’t the most flattering.

18. Alison Brie, SAG Awards

Of all the looks from the 2019 SAG Awards, we have to admit we were the most disappointed with this look worn by Alison Brie. While the dramatic bow detail along the back of the dress looked pretty from behind, from the front it resembled a strange set of wings. We love the sleek shape of this little black dress, but the detailing on the back was totally distracting.

17. Emily Blunt, SAG Awards

Emily Blunt has had a few misses on the red carpet this past year, and we were disappointed to say that she struck again at the 2019 SAG Awards. While we were actually big fans of the slim and glittery shape of this custom Michael Kors dress, we can’t get over the strange ruffled shoulders that overpowered and detracted from the entire look.

16. Melissa McCarthy, Golden Globes

We absolutely love Melissa McCarthy, but we have to admit, we aren’t the biggest fans of this purple look she wore on the Golden Globes red carpet. The dress had a super overpowering silhouette with all the ruffles and tiers which detracted from her beauty rather than enhancing it. We also aren’t the biggest fans of the star detailing across the bust which seemed a little childish.

15. Alison Brie, Golden Globes

Alison Brie is another Golden Globes star that left us a little disappointed with her look! The star opted for a powder blue tulle dress that was sheer at the top and put her black bedazzled bra on full display. The revealing look seemed more suiting for a casual awards show rather than the glamorous Golden Globes.

Source: Press Association

14. Anne Hathaway, Golden Globes

As much as we love cheetah print, we’re not sure it has a place on the red carpet! Anne Hathaway took a big risk when she stepped out at the 2019 Golden Globes wearing this bold full-length cheetah look. She definitely looks fierce in the Ellie Saab number, but overall it was quite the fashion misstep.

13. Judy Greer, Golden Globes

Masculine tuxedo dressing is one of our favorite looks for women to wear on the red carpet, but Judy Greer totally missed the mark with this trend at the 2019 Golden Globes. The wide-leg pants drowned her figure and the tuxedo and bow tie combo was far too sharp and harsh.

12. Janelle Monae, Golden Globes

Janelle Monae is always experimental with her fashion, but we’re not sure her 2019 Golden Globes look was a risk well-rewarded. The Chanel look consisted of a tailored tweed dress with dramatic gold detailing and a white underlay that peaked out on her arms and legs. To make matters even more strange, she topped the look with a circular gold hat that definitely had fashion critics scratching their heads.

11. Linda Cardellini, Oscars

We were quite baffled by this magenta ruffled look worn by Linda Cardellini on the Oscars red carpet. The oversized and overly foofy dress totally drowned her and felt quite over the top. From the ruffles to the bow to the color, we just couldn’t get on board with this look.

10. Charlize Theron, Oscars

We have high expectations for Charlize Theron when she hits the red carpet, but we, unfortunately, weren’t thrilled with her choice of dress for the 2019 Oscars. The look didn’t feel properly tailored to her body, especially with the cuffed sleeves, and it wasn’t the most flattering option for her statuesque figure.

9. Maya Rudolph, Oscars

Maya Rudolph left us stunned with her red carpet look for the 2019 Oscars, but not in a good way. This look had everything from a cape to ruffles to bold color and even a print. It simply felt like too much.

8. Emma Stone, Oscars

Emma Stone wore quite a disappointing dress for this year’s Oscars red carpet. The look was designed by Louis Vuitton and featured a bizarre checkered chocolate and gold print. Many were comparing her look to a waffle, which we can totally see!

7. Kacey Musgraves, Oscars

We were surprised by this baby pink look worn by Kacey Musgraves at the 2019 Oscars this year. It was the definition of foofy and many fans tuning in even compared her look to a loofah! As much as we love and support Kacey Musgraves, this dress simply wasn’t the most flattering.

6. Margot Robbie, BAFTA Awards

Margot Robbie had a fashion misstep at the 2019 BAFTA Awards. The ruffles on this dress seemed to resemble wings and simply felt like too much, especially in combination with all the glitter of the bodice.

EPA/NEIL HALL

5. Lily Collins, BAFTA Awards

Lily Collins had a fashion miss at this year’s BAFTA Awards where she stepped out wearing a deep blue dress paired with a matching jacket. We were quite disappointed with this look since the jacket hid all the details of the dress. We would have much preferred if this look skipped on the jacket to allow the details of the skirt to shine.

EPA/NEIL HALL

4. Rachel Brosnahan, BAFTA Awards

Rachel Brosnahan almost had a winning red carpet look for this year’s BAFTA Awards, except for one detail detracted from her look –the oversized bow on the front! It felt unnecessary and took away from the stunning emerald satin dress, which is why we were quite let down by this look.

EPA/NEIL HALL

3. Maren Morris, Grammys

Country star Maren Morris stepped out at the 2019 Grammy awards wearing a gown designed by Galia Lahav. While we actually don’t mind this muted dusty purple gown, the shoulder detail of the lime green embellishment totally clashed and detracted from the dress.

EPA/NINA PROMMER

2. Jennifer Lopez, Grammys

Jennifer Lopez was a total bombshell when she performed on stage at the 2019 Grammy awards, but we have to admit we weren’t the biggest fans of her first red carpet look. While the dress itself wasn’t too bad, we can’t say the same for the wide-brim hat she decided to add to her look. It simply felt like it distracted from the detailing of her gown!

1. Kylie Jenner, Grammys

Of all the 2019 awards show looks, we were the most confused with this Balmain look worn by Kylie Jenner at the Grammys. It totally drowned her shape in every way from the bizarre sleeves to the oversized pants.
