A Disney Live-Action ‘Hercules’ Remake Is In The Works

Disney is in the works of developing a live-action remake of Hercules! The news of the 1997 animated classic remake was confirmed by Entertainment Weekly.

Dave Callaham, who wrote Marvel’s upcoming Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, is penning the script, while Avengers directors Joe and Anthony Russo are producing the Disney live-action remake.

At this time, there is no director attached to the Hercules live-action remake yet, and casting is still a ways off in the production process.

It seems like remaking Hercules was an obvious choice to join the ever-growing list of live-action remakes from Disney. Ron Clements and Jon Musker directed the original animated Disney film, which reimagined classic Greek myths with a catchy gospel soundtrack from Disney legend Alan Menken. The cast of the animated Hercules film included Tate Donovan as Hercules, James Woods as Hades, Susan Egan as Megara, and Danny DeVito as Phil. Furthermore, just last year, Disney brought the film to the stage with an all new adaption presented by Public Theater at the Delacorte in New York’s Central Park.

At this time, it remains unknown whether or not the new Hercules live-action film will follow the original animated movie or the musical, or if it will take an entirely new approach (like the new Mulan live-action remake, which cut many songs and reimagined the original as an action-drama).
