When it was announced Ben Affleck was taking on the iconic role of Batman following Christian Bale’s incredible turn as the popular superhero, many were surprised and many more were not happy.

It turns out, before we even get a chance to see Affleck as Bruce Wayne/Batman in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, he will be starring in and directing the next Batman film, Entertainment Weekly has confirmed.

Not only is he taking on those two important positions, he will also be co-writing the film along with Geoff Johns, who is the chief creative officer for DC Entertainment. Johns has written some of the most iconic supehero comics and has also taken his talents to TV by writing for well known superhero series, such as Smallville, Arrow and The Flash.

It seems Johns and Affleck are very serious about this project as they will reportedly have their first script for the film in by the end of the summer; however, filming will not start until after he finishes filming Live By Night, which he postponed in favor of Batman v Superman.

Much like Marvel, Warner Bros. and DC have a longterm plan for the development and release of several superhero movies and now it seems that plan will be shifted around to make sure Affleck’s solo Batman film takes priority. Regardless, it will still be awhile before we see him don the cowl and cape for Batman v Superman, which is due out November, 2017, so we likely won’t be seeing the standalone film until around 2019.
