Charlie Ebersol, 31, has always been in the entertainment industry as a writer, producer and entrepreneur, not to mention the fact he is also the son of Saturday Night Live co-creator and NBC Sports chairman Dick Ebersol and actress Susan Saint James.
Lately however, Ebersol is finding himself more in the spotlight than ever as the newest beau of singer and actress, Britney Spears.
During “Britney Day” in Las Vegas in November, Spears confirmed she had a new boyfriend calling him “someone special” and since then she has posted pictures and videos with Ebersol, confirming to everyone they are an adorable couple.
People magazine spoke with Ebersol at his 4th annual NFL Characters Unite event and learned a lot more about the man dating a superstar, including a rather shocking past.
The aim of Ebersol’s NFL program, which is also a documentary, is to match NFL stars who have overcome all different sorts of adversity with kids from their team’s hometown who are going through similar things and need extra support and help from those who have beaten the obstacles.
Ebersol said after meeting with the players, he realized they can “change lives” and said they are really beginning “to see the effects on kids who met their NFL counterparts four years ago.”
He then revealed that his own past was very traumatic, which makes the project mean even more to him personally.
“I was bullied very badly in high school. This is a story I’ve never shared with many people, but I was beaten unconscious with a shovel when I was a sophomore. I was a very successful kid. I sold my first company at a young age. There was a lot of misplaced rage in high school towards me.”
He then revealed that he didn’t view it as bullying and blocked the events from his mind until his brother reminded him, he had gone through some horrible things.
“It wasn’t until I was saying to my brother [Willie, who directed NFL Characters Unite], ‘I couldn’t imagine ever being bullied,’ and he said, ‘You lived this!’ It all came back in a flood,” Ebersol revealed.
He then spoke about the plane crash ten years ago that killed everyone in the plane -including his little brother who was 14-except for Charlie and his father whom Charlie pulled from the wreckage himself.
Ebersol linked all he has overcome to his relationship with Spears stating, “If I had not gone through what I’ve gone through, I would not have been prepared to be in a relationship of any kind, much less in one with someone like Britney, who has the enormous heart that she does.”
