Caitlyn Jenner Responds To Backlash Over Her Gay Marriage CommentsPublished on September 15, 2015.
Caitlyn Jenner is trying to change her tune after receiving backlash over comments she made to Ellen DeGeneres about her stance on same-sex marriage.
While talking to DeGeneres about trying to help people understand her journey as a transgender person, DeGeneres asked if it was more difficult given Jenner has always been a Republican, a party which does not support issues like same-sex marriage, to which Jenner gave a surprising answer. “I’m a traditionalist. I’m older than most people in the audience. I kind of like tradition, and it’s always been a man and a woman. I’m thinking, ‘I don’t quite get it.'”
Following the interview DeGeneres spoke to Howard Stern about what Jenner said and said she was confused someone could ask for everyone’s support and understanding on her journey as a transgender person but then still clearly have a “judgement” about gay marriage.
Now Jenner, 65, has spoken out on her blog, trying to rectify her comments by stating her gay friends have helped her understand, writing, “Like many people, there was a time when I didn’t realize how important it is for gay couples to have the right to get married. But after hearing from my gay friends and learning more about the hardships they faced because of discrimination, it became clear to me that everyone should be able to marry the person they love. I can only hope that by sharing my story, there’s someone out there whose mind has been changed about trans people.”
Those who have watched Jenner’s series about her transition, I Am Cait, will know that Jenner often has to be talked to (and/or coached) about some of the things she says, including not fully understanding the struggles and hardships of transitioning because unlike the majority of transgender people, Jenner is a celebrity and has the money and resources most do not to help the process.
