‘Carol Burnett Show’ And ‘Wonder Woman’ Star Lyle Waggoner Passes Away At 84

Lyle Waggoner, the actor best known for starring on The Carol Burnett Show and Wonder Woman, passed away on Tuesday, March 17, at 84 after battling a long illness.

Waggoner’s family confirmed the news, saying in a statement, “Lyle Waggoner, loving husband, father, grandfather, entrepreneur, and actor passed away peacefully at home on March 17th at the age of 84 with his wife at his side.” The family also shared that his cause of passing was from cancer.

The actor made his way to Hollywood in the mid-1960s from St. Louis, after serving in the U.S. Army. Waggoner soon landed a role on Gunsmoke in 1966 and appeared in three episodes of Lost in Space in 1967, before becoming a finalist for the lead in Batman, but lost to Adam West.

Waggoner then spent seven years on The Carol Burnett Show, first as an announcer and then later as a performer. He left the show in 1974 after starring in 182 episodes to further his career as a leading man. The following year, Waggoner landed the role of Steve Trevor in Wonder Woman, opposite Lynda Carter.

While he was working on Wonder Woman, he created Star Waggons, a company that provided the entertainment industry with high-end luxury trailers.

He continued acting, with special appearances on numerous hit shows including Happy DaysFantasy IslandCharlie’s Angels, and Monk and Mindy. In 1990, Waggoner portrayed an exaggerated version of himself in one episode of The Golden Girls.

Waggoner is survived by his wife of 60 years, Sharon; his two sons, Jason and Beau; and his four grandchildren.
