Christopher Meloni’s return to Law & Order: SVU is just around the corner and he’s given fans a sneak peek of what’s to come by sharing an on-set selfie.
Meloni shared a behind-the-scenes photo from the Law & Order: SVU set with costar Mariska Hargitay. Fans will recall that Meloni played Elliot Stabler on seasons 1 to 12 on the long-running crime show, while Hargitay has starred as Olivia Benson for all 22 seasons.
“We are a little bit closer,” Meloni captioned a black-and-white selfie of the pair on set, teasing his return.
Hargitay also shared a photo from on set, captioning it, “Now even closer…”
Meloni is set to take on a role as a guest star on the current 22nd season of SVU, so fans can expect to see him back in the role as Elliot Stabler even sooner than they thought. The guest appearance will then lead into the spinoff, Law & Order: Organized Crime, which is set to begin airing sometime in spring 2021.
The news of Meloni’s return to the Law & Order franchise broke in March 2020. At the time, it was revealed that the upcoming spinoff series had received a 13-episode order. A press release from NBC shared that the series will follow Stabler as he returns to the NYPD to battle organized crime after suffering a “devastating personal loss” of his own.
Fans will get to follow Stabler’s journey to “find absolution and rebuild his life, while leading a new elite task force that is taking apart the city’s most powerful criminal syndicates one by one,” according to NBC.
