This week was a double elimination round during the Dancing with the Stars semifinals!
During the live semifinals episode, host Tyra Banks split the contestants by announcing three contestants that had qualified for the season 29 finale and the contestants who had landed in the bottom three. Ultimately it was contestants Nelly, Nev Schulman, and Kaitlyn Bristowe who were finalized to make it to the semifinals. On the other end of the leaderboard, Johnny Weir, Skai Jackson, and Justina Machado were revealed as the bottom three contestants.
Out of the remaining three, the contestant with the lowest combined total of viewers’ votes and judges’ scores was Johnny Weir, who was the first to be eliminated. Weir and his pro partner Britt Stewart earned a 27/30 for their salsa and later a 30/30 for their jazz routine.
“You know how hard they have worked. You guys have worked so hard this season. It’s so sad to see you go,” Banks said about Weir and Stewart.
Following Weir’s elimination, Machado and Jackson joined Banks for a final elimination round where it was up to the judges to save one of the contestants. In the end, both Derek Hough and Carrie Ann Inaba chose to save Machado to proceed to the finale. Despite not needing a tie-breaker vote, Bruno Tonioli also added his thoughts: “I agree with my colleagues. We have to base our judgment over the season, and I agree with them. I love you both.”
This decision meant that Skai Jackson and her pro partner Alan Bersten were the second couple to be sent home in the double-elimination round. The duo earned a 27/30 for their cha cha perfomance and a 30/30 for their Viennese waltz.
The Dancing with the Stars finale airs Monday at 8 p.m. ET on ABC.
