‘Grease’ Singalong To Replace Tony Awards Broadcast On CBS

Grease is filling in for one of the most beloved America awards shows!

CBS announced a singalong version of Grease will air on Sunday, June 7 at 8:30 p.m. to fill in for one of the most beloved American awards shows in order to replace the originally scheduled 2020 Tony Awards ceremony. The network, which has broadcast the Tony Awards ceremony since the year of Grease‘s theatrical release in 1978, previously postponed the Broadway-focused awards show in wake of the ongoing global health situation.

CBS’ broadcast of Grease – part of the channel’s Sunday Night Movies series – will feature follow-along lyrics to the movie’s iconic soundtrack, such as “Summer Nights,” “Greased Lightnin’,” and many more. Additional titles airing during the Sunday Night Movies slot include Titanic (May 24) and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (May 31).

As a result of Grease taking over the 2020 Tony Awards slot, many Broadway pros are upset over CBS’ announcement.

Tony nominee Gideon Glick of To Kill a Mockingbird tweeted at the network, “I’m certain there are a million gays out there who could help you curate a greatest hits of the Tony Awards to air instead!”

Frozen star Patti Murin also chimed in on the network’s decision, “[Not] a retrospective of past great Tony performances and speeches and moments?  Or something highlighting the amazing work that people in theatre do for their community?  Or literally anything other than this?”

In addition to the previous postponement of the 2020 Tony Awards, as The Broadway League, a trade group representing Broadway producers and theater owners, announced earlier last week that the famed theatrical sector would remain closed until at least September 6.
