The late Derek Shepard, played by Patrick Dempsey, has returned once again to Grey’s Anatomy after last week’s shocking episode where he made his initial appearance.

While fans were thrilled to see Derek and Meredith reunited on the beach through her vivid dreams, the show has hinted that another major star will be returning to the show.

The biggest mystery of Derek’s reappearance is whether Meredith should walk towards him or away. Fans are speculating that Derek represents some sort of heavenly light and walking towards him might ultimately sacrifice Meredith’s life as she fights a severe case of coronavirus.

The teaser for next week’s episode hinted at the return of another character from Meredith’s past visiting her. The episode ended on a cliffhanger as Richard says, “Meredith’s not improving. They can’t wake her.” A voiceover then cuts in and promises that another character from Meredith’s past will return in the next new episode, which will air two weeks from now.

While the episode didn’t specify exactly which character will be returning, it did provide fans with confirmation that other characters from previous seasons will be making comebacks alongside McDreamy. Many fans are speculating that the character who is returning could be Meredith’s longtime best friend Cristina Yang (Sandra Oh) or another one of her close friends Alex Karev (Justin Chambers) who recently left the show.

Grey’s Anatomy airs Thursdays at 9 p.m. ET on ABC.
