Back in late November, James Cameron reminded fans just how excited they should be for the sequels of the 2009’s blockbuster, record-breaking film Avatar.
The legendary director discussed that three sequels were planned and boldly stated, “I can tell you one thing about them. They’re gonna be bitchin’. You will sh-t yourself with your mouth wide open.”
Now that it is officially 2015, waiting until 2016 for the sure to be spectacular film doesn’t seem so bad, but unfortunately Cameron has dashed fans dreams for next year when he stated the projected release date was “too ambitious” and is likely pushed another year into late 2017.
Cameron’s plan is to write and film all three sequels at the same time and release them over consecutive years, but with the process underway, he realizes his timeline won’t work out as planned.
“There’s a layer of complexity in getting the story to work as a saga across three films that you don’t get when you’re making a stand-alone film,” he said from Wellington, New Zealand where he shot the first Avatar film and plans to shoot the sequels, prompting him to also help promote the local film industry there.
Although the first release date has already been delayed, he did state that the process is going well, “We’re writing three films simultaneously. And we’ve done that so that everything tracks throughout the three films. We’re not just going to do one and then make up another one and another one after that. And parallel with that, we’re doing all the design. So we’ve designed all the creatures and environments.”
