While many mothers will tell you that once you have children the days of putting on makeup and doing your hair every morning or even showering regularly is basically done, for A-list celebrities it seems that no matter the situation, looks and style is always of the utmost importance.

Actress Jennifer Garner on the other hand has never found beauty important, even before kids or being one half of the celebrity power couple with husband Ben Affleck. “What my mom did that I valued so much was to not place beauty high on the list of priorities,” she told Southern Living magazine.

The 42-year old went on to explain that the way in which she grew up taught her to value the truly important things which is something she hopes to impress upon her own children, Violet, 9, Seraphina, 6, and Samuel, 2.

“I feel so fortunate to have grown up in a place where people look out for each other. Community is one thing people crave most, and it’s hard to come by. I grew up with such an excess of it that now where I go, the first thing I do is build my group. It’s really important for my kids to see that everyone doesn’t have the lives they see in Los Angeles. That doesn’t reflect the rest of the world. I want them to grow up with the Southern values I had- to look at people when they say hello and to stop and smell the roses. If I could do half as good a job as my mom did, I’d be pretty happy.”

Garner has previously spoken about her somewhat strict upbringing when it came to makeup, hair and clothes, but now says she appreciates all of it, “My sisters and I all had similar long, straight hair without layers as kids. I still don’t mess with my hair that much, and that keeps it healthy,” she said.

Of course with no emphasis on physical looks in her upbringing, it was strange for Garner when she moved to New York City in the ’90s, “It was a shock when I got to college to hear people say I was pretty,” she recalled.

After several years in the industry however Garner has always stayed true to herself whether at home or on the red carpet stating, “Although I adore it on others, you won’t see me wearing many one-shoulder, asymmetrical, cool things. I can’t feel like I’m wearing a costume.”

Garner poses in the magazine alongside her mother joking, “We are doing this shoot so people can finally stop asking if my lips are real.”
