After an awkward encounter with pop star Kesha at The David Lynch Foundation’s National Night of Laughter and Song, Jerry Seinfeld has decided to speak up and has simply defended his position by saying “I had no idea who she was.”

The encounter consisted of Kesha interrupting Seinfeld in the middle of an interview asking for a hug. Seinfeld was completely caught off guard and denied her hug by replying “no thanks” multiple times. The video almost immediately went viral and the infamous and hilarious hug denial has everyone in the Twitter universe talking.

At the GOOD+ Foundation and MR PORTER Fatherhood Lunch on Thursday, Seinfeld spoke out about the uncomfortable situation. “I’m 63, I don’t know every pop star… I don’t know everyone,” Seinfeld said. He also clarified that he’s never been a “hugger,” especially with someone he doesn’t recognize.

To justify his position further the comedian said, “I was right in the middle of an interview, it was a little off. When you get to be my age and you’ve done a couple things, you have your own reality, in my reality … I don’t hug a total stranger. I have to meet someone, say ‘hello.’ I gotta start somewhere … hug isn’t first moment of a human, two humans. I never did that.”

Although the encounter definitely made a few of us uncomfortable, both Kesha and Seinfeld were able to laugh about it after with no hard feelings. “I’m sure I would have liked her,” Seinfeld told Extra. “But I need to know who you are,” he clarified in a light-hearted tone.
