Following the death of Cathriona White last September, her family and her estranged husband have pointed the finger at her on-again, off-again boyfriend, Jim Carrey.
After receiving a wrongful death lawsuit from White’s estranged husband Mark Burton, Carrey received another from White’s mother Brigid Sweetman, and on Tuesday, October 18, the actor’s legal team responded forcefully dismissing Sweetman’s lawsuit as a “shakedown.”
In her lawsuit, White’s mother is seeking damages from Carrey in a “wrongful death and violation of the drug dealer liability act lawsuit,” according to the documents. Carrey is adamant that the accusations from the family are “based on categorical lies concocted by Sweetman in collaboration with White’s ‘green card’ husband with whom White never lived as husband and wife, and who she married only to avoid deportation to Ireland.”
Both parties are claiming that Carrey illegally obtained the drugs in which White used to commit suicide as he used the false name Arthur King to provide them to her while knowing she was prone to depression and had attempted suicide before. They are also claiming that Carrey gave White three STDs and, when she confronted him, he broke up with her, spurning her depression further.
Meanwhile Carrey is saying that Sweetman abandoned her family when White was a child and they had been “long estranged” at the time of her death. He added that in 2015, when Sweetman found out her daughter was dating Carrey, she asked the actor to buy her a house and she became angry when he refused. He is remaining adamant that he is no way responsible for the death of White.
