After 17 years as the host of Comedy Central’s The Daily Show, Jon Stewart broke the hearts of dedicated fans everywhere when he announced he was retiring from the gig. With such a loyal fan base many wondered who would be selected to carry on the legacy and give viewers what they expect with the job finally going to Trevor Noah.

Unfortunately it didn’t take long for Noah’s past insensitive jokes to be dug up out of his Twitter archives, instantly shrouding the new host in a negative light before even having his first chance behind the desk.

On Monday April 6, after a brief hiatus, The Daily Show returned and Stewart did his best to reassure fans that Noah is still a great choice and to give him a chance before rejecting him based on a Twitter “kerfuffle.”

“I can say this, I think, without hesitation, Trevor Noah will earn your trust and respect…or not. Just as I earned your trust and respect… or did not,” he joked before turning serious. “I do hope you give him the opportunity to earn that trust and respect cause my experience with him is that he is an incredibly thoughtful and considerate and funny and smart individual, and I think if you give him that time it’s going to be well worth it.”

Noah’s tweets which were slammed as anti-Semitic and sexist instantly turned many against him, but along with Stewart, Comedy Central is standing behind their pick as Stewart’s replacement.

“Like many comedians, Trevor Noah pushes boundaries; he is provocative and spares no one, himself included. To judge him based on a handful of jokes is unfair. Trevor is a talented comedian with a bright future at Comedy Central.”
