For years Keanu Reeves and Winona Ryder have been friends and co-stars, but as it turns out they might actually have been husband and wife all this time too.
While promoting their newest co-starring film Destination Wedding, Ryder revealed to Entertainment Weekly that she thinks she actually married Reeves when they starred in 1992’s Dracula. “We actually got married in Dracula,” she told the publication. “No, I swear to god, I think we’re married in real life … In that scene, Francis [Ford Coppola] used a real Romanian priest. We shot the master and he did the whole thing. So I think we’re married.”
“We said yes?” a surprised Reeves responded. “Oh my gosh, we’re married.”
After the revelation went viral, Francis Ford Coppola also chimed in, telling The Guardian that after filming a different version of the wedding, that “having the real wedding ceremony as it might be in that religion [Greek Orthodox Christianity] would be beautiful.”
Coppola then hired a real priest and re-filmed the wedding in a Greek Orthodox church in Los Angeles.
This is pretty authentic and, I think, very beautiful because we actually did the ceremony and had the priest do the ceremony,” he said. “So in a sense, when we were all done, we realized that Keanu and Winona really are married as a result of this scene and this ceremony.”
Of course, Reeves and Ryder certainly haven’t been in a real relationship, even though their professional relationship keeps getting stronger. Destination Wedding marks their fourth time co-starring after Bram Stoker’s Dracula, The Private Lives of Pippa Lee and A Scanner Darkly.
