Longtime, beloved Star Trek star Leonard Nimoy was rushed to the UCLA Medical Center on February 19 after complaining of severe chest pains TMZ has reported.
While Nimoy has continued working at 83 years old including reprising his legendary Star Trek role as Commander Spock in the franchise’s reboot, he has had multiple visits to the hospital in the past few months prompting speculation about his failing health.
It is known that Nimoy suffers from COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease) and the disease is the main reason paramedics wanted to make sure he saw a doctor as soon as possible following his complaints.
In 2014 Nimoy used his Twitter account to speak out about his diagnosis and to give advice, writing, “I quit smoking 30 years ago. Not soon enough. I have COPD. Grandpa says, quit now!! LLAP,” the last part of course standing for Spock’s signature line, “Live Long and Prosper.”
Although he did quit a significant time ago, it seems his years lighting up did catch up to him as COPD is often said to be caused by the habit, but it has barely slowed him down even though he retired from Star Trek conventions in 2011.
Aside from his spot in Star Trek: Into Darkness, Nimoy recently finished up his role as Dr. William Bell on the hit science fiction series Fringe.
Representatives for the actor have not commented on his condition.
