Behind the scenes of her cover shoot for the upcoming May issue of Teen Vogue (out on newsstands April 29), the 17 year-old singer dished about fashion, image and her famous friends.
She says that when you become successful, people often have an “agenda” when they get to know you, so she finds it easier to trust other musicians like Taylor and Katy. They have the same kinds of “work problems,” so you can relate, and open up.
Those work problems doesn’t mean she’s not grateful. “Living in New Zealand, you don’t get these experiences,” she tells the mag. “I spent so much time in my room before. My life is so wild right now. For me to be able to do something I really enjoy and for that to get me out in the world—to South America, to here, to London—every day I kick myself, I’m so lucky.”
For the shoot, photographers looked to iconic photos of “weird” girls in music, using Lorde’s personal style plus some Japanese influences. Check out the video to see their awesome hair, makeup and clothing picks!
Lorde says she wants to send a message to young girls that their dreams are in reach — and that there’s no one particular way you have to look. Stay weird!
