Melissa McCarthy is proving she’s more than just comedic relief in her newest film Spy, alongside the likes of Jason Statham and Jude Law as she mixes action with laughs.

It seemed however that the whole movie was doomed when the leading lady took a pretty severe fall at the beginning of shooting the film.

At the South by Southwest (SXSW) premiere of the film, McCarthy explained the incident, “I slipped on wet marble and I went down. I threw my back out so badly, we spent the whole week trying to get me walking again. It was intense and it was kind of at the beginning of the movie. It was a little dicey.”

While they were hoping for the best, director Paul Feig could only think of the worst, admitting that as he saw her fall he thought, “We’re f—ed.”

As a spy who has to save the world, McCarthy impressively did 90 percent of her own stunts and continued on like a true professional -even after the injury. “She’s an athletic person and the things I was asking her to do, I knew she could pull off. The minute she put her leg up in the door in Bridesmaids, it was like, ‘Ok, I’m not worried about Melissa anymore'”, Feig continued.

As for McCarthy, she was of course up for the challenge of the physical stuff, even if it was difficult, “I have to say, I didn’t know how hard it would be but yet, I weirdly love it,” she said.

“I tried to do everything. I had an amazing stunt woman who could do things better but I was like [my character] is not supposed to be bionic.”

Spy is set to hit theaters on June 5.
