“Finally some use for my Elle Woods fan fiction!” Kaling wrote on Instagram. “So excited to be reunited with my friends [Reese Witherspoon, Lauren Neustadter] and Dan Goor to work on this movie. Elle Woods is so iconic, proving you can be girly and smart at the same time. Bend and snap people!”
Witherspoon will reprise her role as Elle Woods, a fashion merchandising major turned Harvard Law School student from the 2001 comedy. She will also produce with Neustadter, who execute produced Big Little Lies, The Morning Show, and Little Fires Everywhere alongside Witherspoon through their Hello Sunshine banner.
A third installment of the Legally Blonde franchise has been talked about for years now, but one did go into development back in 2018 with original film scribes Kirsten “Kiwi” Smith and Karen McCullagh.
The sequel to Legally Blonde, Legally Blonde 2: Red, White & Blonde, debuted in 2003 and brought Witherspoon’s iconic character to Washington, D.C. as a professional lawyer. Another movie in the franchise titled Legally Blondes was released in 2009, but did not star Witherspoon, but produced it. There was also a Broadway stage musical version in 2007 that spawned a reality competition show The Search for Elle Woods with the winner joining the Broadway production in the lead role.
Matthew Davis, who portrayed Warner in Legally Blonde, and Regina Kind, who played as Grace in Legally Blonde 2, have already said that they would love to reprise their roles in Legally Blonde 3 if given the opportunity to do so.
“Great news alert!! Some things are just meant to be!😜I’m SOOO excited to have @MindyKaling and #DanGoor writing Legally Blonde 3! 💖💫This is #ElleWoodsApproved!💯” Witherspoon wrote on Instagram, confirming that Kaling will be writing the script.
