Actress Patricia Arquette, 46, took the awards season by storm winning both a coveted Golden Globe and an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for her role in the sleeper hit Boyhood.

While she is now one of the leading ladies in Hollywood, it is clear she isn’t the “perfect” sort of beauty by Hollywood standards, with a flaw many seem to notice being the fact her teeth aren’t straight. As it turns out however, Arquette could have gotten them fixed years ago but chose not to then for a very specific reason.

Arquette recalled an experience in the ninth grade when a fellow male student voted her “best looking” but then suggested she straighten her teeth for one very specific reason, so that she could pose for Playboy.

Arquette was stunned by her classmate’s comment, “I said, ‘Why would I want to be in Playboy?’ I just didn’t want to look perfect. I didn’t want to have to change myself to be attractive. I didn’t think that was my responsibility,” she told People magazine.

She also explained how she had already told her parents as well that she didn’t want to “fix” her teeth because “it didn’t feel like it would fit who I was inside.”

Arquette, who used her Oscars acceptance speech to sound the call for women’s equality connected the issue to these discussions about her beauty. “I’ve had so many of these conversations in my life…what I look like on film, what I don’t look like on film. What are we supposed to look like? Men are not having these conversations.”
