Buckingham Palace confirmed earlier this morning that Prince Philip has been hospitalized with an infection.

The 96-year old was admitted to the hospital after he attended the Queen at Royal Ascot races and was intending to appear at the upcoming State Opening of Parliament but will no longer be in attendance.

The statement confirming his hospitalization states, “The Duke of Edinburgh was admitted to King Edward VII Hospital in London last night, as a precautionary measure, for treatment of an infection arising from a pre-existing condition. Prince Philip is in good spirits and is disappointed to be missing the State Opening of Parliament and Royal Ascot.” It has been confirmed Prince Charles has stepped up and will be accompany the Queen instead of his father to the State Opening of Parliament.

Last month, Prince Philip announced his retirement from his royal position. A Buckingham Palace representative stated, “His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh has decided that he will no longer carry out public engagements from the autumn of this year. In taking this decision, the Duke has the full support of the Queen.” The statement added that he would hold true to his previous commitments until August, but would only be attending occasional engagements following this.

We wish a quick and healthy recovery for Prince Philip!
