Actress Reese Witherspoon, 38, is already creating Oscar buzz for her role in her newest film, Wild, which premièred in Los Angeles on Wednesday November 19.
Although she shot most of the film with no make-up at all, Witherspoon was all dolled up for her red carpet appearance, wearing a white strapless dress and bright lipstick to set off the look.
Witherspoon really stepped out of her own comfort zone for the movie as she plays Cheryl, a heroin addict who tries to turn over a new leaf by hiking over one thousand miles of the Pacific Crest Trail.
The film is based on Cheryl Strayed’s memoir, Wild, in a story that involves sex, drug abuse and even some nudity for Witherspoon.
She took on the challenge, looking forward to playing a tough female lead, “It’s been so exciting to see the conversation changing about women in film and strong female leads in film, not just the afterthought of fourth lead, but actually as interesting dynamic characters. Whether you like them, don’t like them, at least they’re starting a conversation.”
In a recent interview, Witherspoon also spoke out about women needing to stand up for each other, specifically referencing the backlash fellow actress Renee Zellweger experienced after looking completely different at her own red carpet appearance in October.
“It’s horrible. It’s cruel and rude and disrespectful, and I can go on and on and on. It bothers me immensely,” Witherspoon told The Hollywood Reporter.
She continued with, “Why, and it’s particularly women, why do they have to tear women down? And why do we have to tear other women down to build another woman up? It drives me crazy.”
Witherspoon’s next big role is in 2015’s Inherent Vice alongside Walk the Line costar Joaquin Phoenix.
