Sabrina the Teenage Witch will officially be living on through a Riverdale spinoff on the CW network, but it will be much different than the beloved television series featuring Melissa Joan Hart!
The CW network and Warner Brothers have collaborated to develop The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina which will remake the origin of Sabrina the Teenage Witch as a fearful coming-of-age story. The show fits in the vein of Rosemary’s Baby and The Exorcist and will feature Sabrina fighting her duality of being half-witch and half-mortal to protect her family and the daylight world.
The project is being set for a 2018-2019 premiere and will be a companion of Riverdale, which was inspired by the Archie comics and created in 2014 by executive producer Robert Aguirre-Sacasa. Sacasa will also write and produce The Chilling Adventures alongside Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, Jon Goldwater, and Lee Toland Krieger.
The character of Sabrina is rumored to appear on Riverdale this season. This doesn’t come as too much of a surprise because Jason Blossom had traveled to the Greendale side of the river before his death in the first season and Greendale is Sabrina’s hometown.
The fictional literary character of Sabrina was previously brought to the television screens by Melissa Joan Hart on the sitcom Sabrina the Teenage Witch which ran on ABC from 1996-2006. The Chilling Adventures is said to be a much darker take on the character and leans more towards the thriller genre.
