Musician Tom Petty has passed away at the age of 66 after experiencing cardiac arrest early Monday morning.
Petty’s manager confirmed to E! News that the rocker was not able to be revived and released a statement. “On behalf of the Tom Petty family we are devastated to announce the untimely death of our father, husband, brother, leader and friend Tom Petty.”
“He suffered cardiac arrest at his home in Malibu in the early hours of this morning and was taken to UCLA Medical Center but could not be revived. He died peacefully at 8:40 pm surrounded by family, his bandmates and friends.”
Many fellow musicians and fans have expressed their condolences to the family and shared their favorite memories with Petty. Lady Gaga wrote, “Thank you for the gift of music that you gave and will continue give to the world through your legacy.”
Mick Jagger also expressed his dismay and sadness by writing, “Just when I thought today could not get any worse… R.I.P. Tom Petty. Thank you for your beautiful music and inspiration.”
Country star Jake Owen used Tom’s own lyrics to pay tribute to him. “‘I’m gonna keep this world from dragging me down, I’ll stand my ground,’ -Tom Petty #timely,” he shared.
