Selena Gomez’s Grandfather Confirms She Has Lupus

Selena Gomez is battling lupus.

The singer’s grandfather confirmed to Radar Online that the 21 year-old singer was diagnosed with the auto-immnune disease a while ago, and has been ungergoing treatment. He says she’s doing well; take a look at the video to see his full quote about the issue.

Lupus is a chronic disease that can affect any part of the body, such as skin, joints and internal organs. When someone is suffering from lupus, the body can’t tell the difference between its own antibodies and foreign cells, so it begins to attack its own healthy tissue, causing inflammation, pain, and damage.

Selena entered a rehab facility back in January for exhaustion; perhaps she was also dealing with a lupus flare-up at the time. Strangely, her grandfather knew about her lupus diagnosis but found out about the rehab second-hand, and called Selena afterward to warn her about drugs. He says that Selena is overworked and needs more time off.

Earlier this year, Selena gave an inspirational speech at the We Day conference in California, breaking her silence about her experience in rehab.

“I lost sight of who I was,” she said of caving to the pressures around her. “I listened to opinions of people and I tried to change who I am because I thought others would accept me for it. And I realized I don’t know how to be anything but myself.”
