Over the past couple of weeks, actress Shannen Doherty has been opening up more and more about her courageous battle with cancer.
After sharing a series of photos revealing the process of shaving her head, and another photo thanking her family and friends for their support, she offered another update in an exclusive interview with Entertainment Tonight.
“The worst day was the confirmation that I had cancer because you just look at the people you love and think, ‘I can’t believe I have to tell them this.'” The 45-year-old first publicly revealed her breast cancer diagnosis in March 2015, and is now opening up more than ever, adding that the cancer did spread. “I had breast cancer that spread to the lymph nodes, and from one of my surgeries we discovered that some of the cancer cells might have actually gone out of the lymph nodes. So for that reason, we are doing chemo, and then after chemo, I’ll do radiation.”
Doherty also went on to open up about being fearful for her future. “The unknown is always the scariest part. ‘Is the chemo going to work? Is the radiation going to work? You know, am I going to have to go through this again, or am I going to get secondary cancer?'” Despite the fear and the difficult battle, Doherty knows she has a great support system around her, especially husband Kurt Iswanienko. “After my first treatment, I couldn’t eat, I couldn’t drink – I was really weak,” she admitted. “My husband sat on the bed, and he was crying, saying, ‘Please, you can’t sustain like this, Shannen.’ That’s when he picked me up and put me in the car [to go to the hospital]. And my mom was right there with him. Watching your family be so affected, that’s the rough days.”
