Legendary British rocker Joe Cocker has died at the age of 70, multiple sources have confirmed.
Best known for his cover of the Beatles’ “With A Little Help From My Friends” which hit number one on music charts in 1968, Cocker had a music career spanning an incredible 40 years.
Cocker died at his home in Colorado after a battle with lung cancer, Sony released a statement confirming his death, “John Robert Cocker, known to family, friends, his community and fans around the world as Joe Cocker, passed away on December 22, 2014 after a hard fought battle with small cell lung cancer. Mr. Cocker was 70 years old.”
Born in Sheffield, England, Cocker won a Grammy in 1983 for “Up Where We Belong” a duet which he sang with Jennifer Warnes and in 2007 was knighted by the Queen for his music achievements.
His passing will be felt by many in the music industry as he shared stages with the likes of The Rolling Stones, Jimi Hendrix and Rod Stewart, and tributes are already beginning to pour in as news of his death spreads.
His agent Barrie Marshall told the BBC, “It is impossible to fill the space he leaves in our hearts,” while Ringo Starr tweeted out, “Goodbye and God bless to Joe Cocker from one of his friends peace and love. R.”
