The CW has found a new money-maker in superhero themed shows over the years and with the success of Arrow, The Flash and Supergirl, they are looking to expand by adding Batwoman to its characters.
It has now been confirmed that actress, singer, and model Ruby Rose has been tapped to take on the iconic role and will first be seen in the network’s annual crossover event this winter between the three DC shows, but a stand-alone series is also being developed.
If Batwoman is picked up, it will mark the first TV series focusing on an LGBT superhero.
“Armed with a passion for social justice and a flair for speaking her mind, Kate Kane soars onto the streets of Gotham as Batwoman, an out lesbian and highly trained street fighter primed to snuff out the failing city’s criminal resurgence,” reads the official logline for the new character. “But don’t call her a hero yet. In a city desperate for a savior, Kate must overcome her own demons before embracing the call to be Gotham’s symbol of hope.”
Rose, who is openly gay and gender fluid couldn’t contain her excitement in an Instagram post confirming the news of her casting. “The Bat is out of the bag and I am beyond thrilled and honored. I’m also an emotional wreck.. because this is a childhood dream. This is something I would have died to have seen on TV when I was a young member of the LGBT community who never felt represented on tv and felt alone and different. Thank you everyone. Thank you god,” she wrote alongside a photo of herself and a Batwoman drawing.
