FBI Agents Mulder and Scully are back to unearth all the supernatural secrets, Fox officially announced on Tuesday March 24.
The network confirmed that The X-Files will be back for a special six-episode event series, 13 years after the series first ended and the along with the original series’ creator Chris Carter, stars David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson will also be back as their iconic characters.
“I think of it as a 13-year commercial break. The good news is the world has only gotten that much stranger, a perfect time to tell these six stories,” Carter said in a statement.
“We had the privilege of working with Chris on all nine seasons of The X-Files — one of the most rewarding creative experiences of our careers— and we couldn’t be more excited to explore that incredible world with him again,” Fox Chairmen and CEOs Dana Walden and Gary Newman said in statement.
“The X-Files was not only a seminal show for both the studio and the network, it was a worldwide phenomenon that shaped pop culture—yet remained a true gem for the legions of fans who embraced it from the beginning. Few shows on television have drawn such dedicated fans as the X-Files, and we’re ecstatic to give them the next thrilling chapter of Mulder and Scully they’ve been waiting for.”
The sci-fi series first premièred in September 1993 and ran until 2002, winning five Golden Globes and 16 Emmys over the course of its almost ten year run.
No release date has been announced, although production is supposed to begin summer 2015 while working around the current projects that Duchovny and Anderson are both tied to.
