Actress Rita Wilson whose acting career has spanned decades, made a very personal and difficult statement to People magazine, revealing she was recently diagnosed breast cancer and has undergone multiple surgeries since.

In her exclusive statement to the magazine, the 58-year old wife of Tom Hanks, opened up about dealing with the news and getting through such a tough time with the help of family, friends and doctors.

“I have taken a leave from the play “Fish in the Dark” to deal with a personal health issue. Last week, with my husband by my side, and with the love and support of family and friends, I underwent a bilateral mastectomy and reconstruction for breast cancer after a diagnosis of invasive lobular carcinoma. I am recovering and most importantly, expected to make a full recovery. Why? Because I caught this early, have excellent doctors and because I got a second opinion.”

Wilson went on to reveal that she has an underlying condition LCIS (lobular carcinoma in situ) that has been closely monitored for years and after biopsies was discovered to have PLCIS (pleomorphic carcinoma in situ) but no cancer was discovered, and luckily her friend urged her to get a second opinion.

“A different pathologist found invasive lobular carcinoma. His diagnosis of cancer was confirmed by, yet, another pathologist. I share this to educate others that second opinion is critical of your health.”

She ended her statement on a positive note saying she feels “blessed” for all the support and is “getting better every day and look forward to renewed health.”
