Tyra Banks, 41, is one of the most recognizable faces in the entertainment industry thanks to the fact that she became a supermodel when she was still a teenager and then went on to have an enormous amount of success with America’s Next Top Model.

While the life of celebrities, especially gorgeous models, is glamorized, Banks took to her Instagram account on Thursday, June 25 to share a throwback picture of herself and rant about the expectations and unseen pressures for models in today’s tech-based world.

“Models have so much pressure today. They have to look good on AND off the set. They have to arrive backstage at fashions shows looking and dressed as if they are already ON a runway. They have to be slimmer than slim. Skinnier than skinny,” she began.

She went on to point out that a lot has changed in the industry, especially because of social media. “They have to compete with actresses, recording artists and reality stars for magazine covers and ad campaigns. They have to have tons of followers on social media to book top notch jobs.”

She also noted that they also have to be very careful with social media, as well as keep followers happy. “And they have to do selfies that make them look relatable, but not TOO relatable, because then people may comment that they don’t understand, ‘Why the heck is THAT girl a friggin’ model!??!!!!'”

Banks addressed the fact that the skinny expectations for models has gotten worse, not better, despite campaigns against body-shaming. “We had to think about our weight, but not like today. I think I was size 6, not a size 0 […] I’m sending love and hugs to all working, aspiring and super models worldwide. You all have lots to live up to. And I’m here cheering for you every single day. Stay strong girls.”
