The Wolfman project is based on a pitch by Gosling, according to Variety. The movie will be set in the present day, and will be “in the vein of Jake Gyllenhaal’s thriller Nightcrawler,” per Varitey, who first reported the story.
The news comes just after Universal Pictures’ saw the box office success of The Invisible Man, which has brought to life the studio’s planned monster movie universe, which was derailed when Tom Cruise’s The Mummy reboot underperformed in 2017. In addition to Wolfman, another Universal monster, Dracula, is in development at Blumhouse, with Destroyer filmmaker Karyn Kusama serving as director.
The infamous lycanthrope character has been seen on the big screen several times, including in 1941’s The Wolf Man, which starred Lon Chaney Jr as the titular character, and in 2010’s The Wolfman, starring Benicio del Toro.
The search for a director for the upcoming Wolfman reboot is currently underway. At this time, there is no other information known about the project.
