Only a couple of months after receiving harsh criticism for the biopic Aaliyah: The Princess of R&B, the Lifetime network has once again offended several people after the airing of Whitney, a biopic focused on the life of Whitney Houston who passed away in February 2012 at the age of 48.

As the unauthorized film aired over the weekend there was an outcry from fans about the endless explicit sexual scenes and focus on drug use and none were more upset than the family of Whitney Houston who posted a lengthy statement on the singer’s official website.

Written by Houston’s sister-in-law Pat Houston, the statement takes aim at the network as well as the director, Angela Bassett.

“If you watch this movie, watch it knowing that Lifetime is notorious for making bad biopics of deceased celebrities and brace yourself for the worst. You should not be surprised that someone decided to do a made for TV biopic. And, I might add, without the family’s blessing and despite her mother’s request not to do this movie. It happens every day.”

The family was also extremely disappointed in Bassett who they believe used her status as Houston’s “friend” to get the film produced.

“Misrepresenting the term friendship to advance an agenda is not only disrespectful and dishonest but a slap in the face to her true and loyal friends. You should expect people will always rise to the occasion for prominence and profit- not love, respect or honor. I question the morality of the making of this because of the lack of experience knowing Whitney’s life.”

As mentioned, those who did watch the biopic were shocked by the amount of sexual scenes between Whitney Houston played by former America’s Next Top Model contestant, Yaya DaCosta and Bobby Brown played by Arlen Escarpeta, calling it a disgrace to her legacy.

“This @lifetimetv movie doesn’t do Whitney Houston’s legacy any justice, so far it’s only sex & Cocaine #Whitney #WhitneyHoustonMovie,” one fan tweeted.
