Top Earning Delivery Jobs in America

Published on May 10, 2018. Updated May 10, 2023

In recent years, the gig economy has become an increasingly popular way for individuals to earn additional income. One of the most popular gig jobs is delivery driving. Delivery jobs provide a flexible schedule, the ability to work independently, and the opportunity to earn competitive pay. With the growing demand for online ordering, the need for delivery drivers is at an all-time high. There are so many options available, it’s often difficult to figure out which one is worth your time. Fortunately, you’re only ever an online search away from learning more about the highest earning delivery jobs in America today.

DoorDash

DoorDash is one of the largest food delivery companies operating in North America, with services available in many regions of the United States, Canada, Puerto Rico, and Australia. Whether you prefer to deliver by car, bike, scooter, or even by walking, DoorDash offers flexible options for those looking to make extra money.

To qualify as a DoorDash driver, you must be 18 years or older and hold a valid driver’s license if delivering by vehicle. As a full-time DoorDash driver, you could expect to earn approximately $45,000 per year, including tips, with the added benefit of receiving discounts on vehicle repair expenses to maintain your delivery vehicle in optimal condition.

Instacart

Unlike other delivery companies that focus on delivering hot food from local restaurants, Instacart’s primary focus is on delivering groceries to individuals with disabilities or those who lack time to go to the supermarket. In select locations, Instacart also offers pick-up services from drug stores and other local chains.

To be an Instacart driver, you must be at least 18 years old, possess a valid driver’s license, have access to a car, and own a smartphone that is new enough to run the driver app (at least iPhone 5 or Android 4.4). You can earn extra income through tips while enjoying the flexibility of a self-determined schedule

Amazon Flex

Amazon often contracts out their deliveries to third-party companies, making it relatively simple to become an Amazon delivery driver (although you will technically be a freelancer, not an Amazon employee). Amazon Flex drivers are responsible for same-day Prime deliveries, next-day Prime deliveries, Amazon Fresh grocery orders, and even Amazon Restaurant orders.

To qualify as an Amazon Flex driver, you must be at least 21 years old, pass a background check, and have access to a properly insured vehicle. While Amazon estimates that you can earn up to $25 per hour, your actual earnings will depend on factors such as tips, delivery speed, and your specific location.

Postmates

Postmates is a prevalent delivery service that operates in over 3,000 cities across the United States, offering delivery services for takeout food, as well as grocery and drugstore orders. Postmates delivery workers receive regular pay and tips, along with additional benefits.

If you complete at least 10 deliveries per month, you are eligible for discounts on specific shops and brands through the PerkSpot Program. To deliver for Postmates, you must be 18 years of age and possess a suitable vehicle, along with a valid driver’s license and insurance.

Grubhub

Grubhub is a food delivery service that partners with local restaurants to deliver food to customers. Drivers, also known as “Delivery Partners,” are paid a base pay, as well as additional pay for distance, time, and promotions.

Delivery Partners can earn an average of $12-$15 per hour, with the potential to earn more during peak times. Grubhub requires drivers to be at least 19 years old, have a valid driver’s license and insurance, and have access to a car or bicycle.

UberEats

With the UberEats smartphone app, drivers can deliver food from almost any local restaurant. Uber’s widespread popularity means that drivers can often work at their convenience while maintaining a steady workload.

To qualify as an UberEats driver, you must have at least one year of driving experience and a valid driver’s license. The good news is that exceptional service can often lead to increased income through tips. Uber also provides additional benefits such as instant pay and even financial assistance in specific situations.

A New Career, Delivered!

Delivery jobs are a great way to earn additional income on your own schedule. The best part about these delivery jobs is that they don’t require any specialized skills or education, and they allow individuals to work as much or as little as they want.

These jobs are not without their challenges. Delivery jobs can be physically demanding, and drivers are often required to navigate traffic and deliver packages or food in all weather conditions. So make sure you do your research and find the delivery job that best fits your lifestyle and needs.
